My first 4000 meter peak :-) Climbing was quite easy and a little boring (an uncountable number of switchbacks.....), but at the summit I really could feel it WAS high :-)

I will be out west in the Death Valley area in a couple of months and was thinking about trying the climb (after seeing the photo).
Did it require and climbing equipment or special gear? Where did you start the climb (on the North, East, West, or south side) Any recommendations?

Jeremy, the only special thing you really need is a permit (look here). We got ours it in Lone Pine village the day before our climb. We started from Whitney Portal Trailhead, it's the most heavily used route, and the shortest. The elevation at the trailhead is 2550 m (8360 ft), the elevation at the summit is 4417 m (14,491 ft). If you want to go up and down in one day (it is 17 km one way), take a flashlight. No rope, no crampons etc - the trail is safe and easy to follow, something for climbers ages 7-107 :-)
Enjoy :-)
