Artek Esplanadi Store, Helsinki, Finland

Artek Esplanadi Store, Helsinki, Finland

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young Finns led by the visionary modern architect Alvar Aalto.

Alvar Aalto began designing furnishings as a natural and important extension of his architectural thinking. His first modern furniture was created in 1931-32 for the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, which proved to be his international breakthrough. Artek was set up in 1935 to market Aalto's furniture, lamps and textiles, particularly on international markets where Artek focused its operations from the initial stages.

Artek's design philosophy brings a human perspective to modernism. By blending functionalism with form and sculptural simplicity with the emotional warmth of wood, Artek's furniture supports and nourishes our physical and psychological wellbeing.

Artek's iconic status is founded on innovative design thanks to its founder, Alvar Aalto. In the 1930s Aalto invented new methods for bending and splicing wood to realise the revolutionary structural ideas and fluid organic forms of his most dynamic designs.

Artek's reputation is founded on our commitment to quality and continuity. Modern techniques combined with traditional craftsmanship ensure the quality of each piece of furniture. Tables and chairs supplied in the 1930s are still in use proving the furniture's longevity and graceful aging process. This is supported by a service policy that ensures we can provide any replacement part.

Mademoiselle Chair

Mademoiselle Chair

This is an innovative design for an armchair in terms of its clever and novel combination of two aesthetic qualities: the structure is an injected mould of transparent polycarbonate upon which are placed four fasteners, allowing for a sturdy yet flexible fit to a seat made of expanded polyurethane. Mademoiselle’s innovative technology consists in the use of unusually thick, soft fabric for the seat, which allows for maximum comfort and enhanced aesthetic quality. Its boasts a harmonious linear design and extraordinary comfort. For business orders, personalized compositions using Kvadrat® fabric - Linea Prato Plain – can be arranged. In this case, the minimum order is for 20 items, quotations given on request.

Elegant and fashionable are words to describe the version designed by Rosia Missoni with fabrics from the collection of Missioni Home. Among the versions are: Vevey, with multicolour, kaleidoscopic flowers in red or burnt tones and Cartagena with black and white flower graffiti.

Made in Italy by Kartell. Designer: Philippe Starck.

Bourgie Table Lamp

Bourgie Table Lamp

The revisiting of a classic: the baroque table lamp. The revolutionary feature of this lamp is that it is made entirely of transparent or batch-dyed polycarbonate. On the one hand, it is classical, rich and traditional, and on the other, it is innovative, transparent and ironic. The quality of the material and its extremely highquality processing lend it the resemblance of a precious, crystal table lamp.

The baroque style base is composed of three decorated layers that interconnect, and the large lampshade is made with a plissé effect, to create a myriad play of reflections once the lamp is turned on.

Thanks to a special coupling system on the lampshade, it can be assembled at three different heights: 68, 73 and 78 centimetres. You can choose to assemble it at the height you prefer and, later, modify it according to your preferred use. In this way, Bourgie takes on greater personality, giving the user the possibility to transform it instantly into a splendid decorative table or desk lamp.

Made in Italy by Kartell. Designer: Ferruccio Laviani.
