      I actually ended up doing this out of necessity on my trip to China a few months ago when I dropped my NIKON in Starbucks in Shanghai and broke the plastic baffel that holds the lens to the camera. The only way to shoot photos was to attempt to hold the lens in place! Actually got great photos and some interesting ones as well. Didn't know it was called Freelensing!
