Bluebird Nestboxes

We put up our first Bluebird nest box in 1999, and I began photographing the progress of the nests in 2004, keeping my first complete documentation in 2005 here at Flickr. I have no records of the early years, but the photos do provide good clues. We added a second nest box in 2005, and a third in 2008. There have been mistakes and heart breaks (mainly due to snakes) but I believe we've been getting better at helping the bluebirds over the years. I encourage anyone who has the appropriate habitat to put up nest boxes for these beautiful birds. They can definitely use the help, and they make wonderful neighbors!

As of this writing (July, 2009) there have been 79 bluebirds that got their start in our nest boxes, and that is a very good thing. I only wish there were more!

* in 2006 we had a Carolina Chickadee nest which fledged 5, so that cut down on the number of bluebirds. We were perfectly happy to host the chickadees too.
