BluebirdNB1 20070518P 001wp

BluebirdNB1 20070518P 001wp by lucycat.
Yesterday there were three eggs in Nestbox #1, and this is what I found today. She appears to have started incubating the eggs, so the brood is complete at either three or four eggs. The fact that this female remained on the nest, seeming pretty much unperturbed, leads me to think that this is the same Mrs. B as for the previous brood in this nestbox.

The bluebird parents' behavior varies a lot from one individual to another. I do think this is the same mom as for the first brood in NB1 this year. Here she is then:

BluebirdNB1 20070328 106wp

She did that more than once. By contrast Mrs. B in NB2 for the first brood invariably heard me coming and vacated the nest before I even got near it, and her Mr. B would dive-bomb me relentlessly through the whole nesting. Mr. B from NB1 never came near me, though he watched from nearby.

For all I know, Mrs. B of NB1 may have been nesting there for years and is just used to it all.

This is a very beautiful bird! Nice!
I'm pretty sure that you know what you're doing, but isn't dangerous to get this close to the nest?

Bye

Guilherme, I think bluebirds are something of a special case. I know that some birds are easily disturbed on the nest and we should be careful to avoid that. But in the case of bluebirds, if people hadn't started putting up nestboxes for them, around 50 years ago I think it was, they might be nearly extinct by now. Habitat loss has put them at our mercy. Here's an excellent article from the Maryland Bluebird Society. Scroll down to read the part about Monitoring a Bluebird Trail.

One thing they say is: "Do not put up a Bluebird box if you do not plan to monitor it. Check your Bluebird boxes at least once a week during the nesting season, until chicks are close to fledging."

That's interesting what it says about monitoring the box, but what exactly are you supposed to be looking out for?

This is a wonderful shot! In the past, we have had females so stubborn to leave the nest that, when we did our twice weekly monitoring, we had to pick them up to check the eggs and babies. And they were fine with that. :)

Cynthia, here's a link to Julie Zickefoose's Bluebird Troubleshooting Chart. I've used her booklet, Enjoying Bluebirds More as my primary guide since around my second year with nestboxes. The first bluebird book I got was Donald and Lillian Stokes' The Bluebird Book. They used to have a weekly bird show on PBS; it was the highlight of my week! Wish they'd run that again. Anyway, both are excellent.

Also, there is a bewildering amount of good information about bluebirds on the web and available through searches. Great stuff!

How incredible. I am blown away. I have three nesting boxes at my home in NC. The 3rd house just started building their nest yesterday. It was up for two days before the bluebirds started checking it out and finally decided it was great real estate.

I have been trying to figure out a way to make photos also...how in the heck did you manage that?

Magic is in the air! I saw this photo in Magical!
