52 Weeks 2012, Week 5 - Fire

Take one large-ish red chilli, one small blob of blu-tack and some chips from a fire-lighter block. Place in front of black background mounting the chilli on a needle stuck into a board. Light from left with reflector to right. Stick fire-lighter to chilli with blu-tack, take a few test shots for exposure etc. Ignite fire-lighter and keep shutter going.

I rarely take straight portraits. Probably because no-one asks me to mainly, and I can't be bothered to ask people if I can use them as a model. However last week I was asked to take some basic head and shoulder shots of four local artists, three of whom I've known for a while via the gallery I display work in, for a forthcoming exhibition they have in Whitstable. The portraits themselves will be 'worked on', I was just providing the raw material so to speak.
