Wild proboscis monkey in Bako National Park - Malaysia - Sarawak - Borneo Island - South East Asia

Preferring coastal areas and mangrove forests, proboscis monkeys are found only on the island of Borneo. They eat fruits, leaves, seeds, shoots and occasionally invertebrates. Aided by webbing between their digits, proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers and will leap from trees into the water, sometimes swimming deep under the surface. Usually active from late in the afternoon until dark, they stay mostly in the trees and never travel far from a river. Hunting and habitat loss threaten proboscis monkeys. (source (c) WWF)
The species is listed as Endangered as it has undergone extensive population reductions across its range, and ongoing hunting and habitat destruction continue to threaten most populations. Numbers have declined by more than 50% (but probably less that 80%) over the past 3 generations (approximately 36-40 years). Source IUCN (c) 2008
With its rainforest abundant wildlife, jungle streams, waterfalls, interesting plant life, secluded beaches and trekking trails, Bako offers visitor an excellent introduction to the rainforest of Borneo.
