These apartment buildings are just beautiful. I love the architectural detail of the balconies, and the fact that the parking garage is open and just below them, not underground.

It's a shame that some new condo buildings lack creative graphic details like that.

Hey, wait a minute. These look familiar for some reason. ;~)) Very nice in b&w and square.

    8. boristheblade (86 months ago | reply)

For some reason I want to see this upside down. I think it is because the motion in this image pushes upward, and it makes me feel uncomfortable, so I want it to be pushing downward.

      I adore this building

I see two cobs of corn, but mainly because I'm hungry right now I think.

    12. Lú_ (86 months ago | reply)

Thanks, everybody! And here I posted this mainly because I felt a dearth of black and white in my stream lately. :) (I still have to do something about yesterday's identifies Guinness dearth, though.)

@Steffie, I heard from a local the first time I was in Chicago that the building could be in much better shape than it is, unfortunately. But, much as I admire height in buildings, this is still the only apartment tower I've ever seen that I've actually wanted to live in.

@Roger, this is actually a different shot from the others. :)

@Joseph, I'll just have to leave you off the housewarming invite list when I finally get my Marina City apartment. ;)

@Steve, in the right light, they're yellow.

I really like the way you've framed this... for me, it jars and creates tension. I also like it this way up! These remind me a little of Centre Point in London.

Lu--nice shot; how did you find it without no cars in the parking bays? Whenever I've tried to shoot Marina City there are always cars parked all the way up the ramp.

flyzipper--the architect, Bertrand Goldberg, took his inspiration from corncobs, so your impression was not just the result of hunger pangs.

    16. Metrix X (86 months ago | reply)

Almost this exact photo at a contact opening this evening.

    17. Lú_ (86 months ago | reply)

Luck, Teee? Or maybe they all took cabs home after St. Patrick's Day.

And ha, Ryan! I hardly thought it was unique. :)

my uncle used to live there and when we were kids he used to take us to the roof and let us rollerskate up there, (he knew the security guard to let us up there).

the wind was so strong and we were so little that it literally blew us around the roof in circles. we got such a kick out of it.

thanks for posting this, not only is it an excellent photo, but it brought back some wonderful childhood memories.

Great shot! I moved to L.A. three weeks ago, but before then I worked at a business in Marina City for over a year. Brings back warm (and chilly) memories of Chicago...

I was sooo going to suggest this one! It is one of the reasons I fear to close the submissions on Picture the Cure. Because folks may come up with gems afterwards and then what? :-)

The stuff of sci-fi nightmares, I imagine these suddenly cranking up and spinning through the city like a giant crusher, obliterating everything in it's path! Overactive imagination?!!

How funny, I marked this as a fav about a month ago, and this week I was in Chicago for the first time. I saw these buildings and kept wondering why they seemed familiar to me. Now I know.

    32. Lú_ (85 months ago | reply)

      :D

I wonder how often that could happen to people in general? Now I wish I could search my favorites by tags, to find the places I should visit!

Excellent ! I took the same buildings in Chicago just last summer but from the river. I've captioned them " Silent Cannons " as they look like cannons from a war ship. 2 copies exclusively produced for a private collector in Toronto. Chicago has some amazing architecture.

I grew up just north of Chicago and have seen numerous photos of these two buildings and seen them on movies and TV shows (eg The Bob Newhart Show), but you have definitely made them your own with this photo. Wonderful lighting, great point of view and the B&W work to create a whole new view of these two buildings.

      A fave of mine.

Round lives framed square is published in the latest issue of JPG Magazine, one of fifteen photographs in the Adobe-sponsored feature "Creative License," focusing on photography as design. Many thanks to JPG for the support of my work and that of so many other terrific photographers, including Kampanat Kaewngam, whose Spider Web, on the right, I love.
