Grand Street bicycle lane

a median - island for pedestrians should be here
Grand Street bicycle lane by ratherbebiking.
I think Gothamist loves using this photo in alarmist articles about the lane because no cyclists are in it. I should note that this was a very cold Monday morning in November, I was one of few cyclists in it. I'll put up a new one that shows the lane being used to it's full potential soon.

I think the buffer should be narrowed in order to make a small buffer right by the curb.

devb - actually, I rode it start to finish 5 times between friday evening and monday morning (when this was taken) and I only saw one van parked in it.

krakow - i agree, but maybe the buffer on the sidewalk side of the lane should be raised/protected by pylons?

Nice lane, and a very generous buffer. That's good.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Krakow Bicycles / Rowery w Krakowie, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

actually, krakow is the city. "krakow bicycles" is the name of my new bike blog :) (it's smif, remember?)

They've done a great thing on 9th with buffers on both sides.
Bway blvd on the other hand - bad - pedestrians walking on the lane.

I think they should start to put up TWO WAY bike lanes, like they do here.

Cheers!

smif -

sorry about that i'm used to calling people on twitter by their display names.

the 9th avenue lane actually only has a buffer on the traffic side, there's no sidewalk side buffer - but theres few pedestrians on 9th avenue most hours, and the sidewalks there are wider than on grand and broadway.

broadway would work but pedestrians are the problem - i think the lane should be kept in and something should be done about moron pedestrians - they wouldn't walk into a lane of traffic without looking behind them, so why a bike lane of traffic?

at least we know it's human idiocy causing the problem on broadway, not a lack of space that's forcing them into the lane.

TWO WAY bike lanes, is a very cool idea.

my first post was a joke, but almost any time i use the bike lanes downtown i have a problem with idiot salmon-wannabe-bikers treating the bike lanes as if they already were two-way.

on the other hand, i'm getting much better at bicycle chicken.

salmon cyclists are a huge problem - for safe cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. i do my best to ignore them and ride as if they weren't there (forcing them into parked cars).

See, that's why two way bike lanes are good. Although, ON the one way street it may be quite dangerous (like you say.)
The other good thing we do is contra-flow of traffic bike lane. Then those who travel "wrong way" use the lane and those who go the same direction as cars just share the other wide lane in cars. That makes a lot of sense.

Oooh goodie, another nice new lane to check for my commute.

That 9th Avenue path is a beaut, but pedestrians do like it. And when I head east from 9th on Bleeker the bike lane gets really messy...sometimes it feels like I'm riding in a street fair...

p.s. nice blog

The articles are usually negative about the lanes, or they are just echoing people who complain about them..
