Public Health Service Hospital (PHSH) - Presidio, San Francisco, CA

For the PHSH Demolition photos, go to the PHSH Demolition gallery.

Photos by Tristan Savatier

The abandoned Public Health Service Hospital (PHSH) is located in the Presidio of San Francisco, at the north end of 15th av (see aerial photo, historical map, google-map, google earth Placemark, and bird's eye view). Built in 1931 on the site of the old U.S. Marine Hospital (1875), the 480-bed hospital, also known as building 1801, closed in 1981.

From 1981 to 1988 the hospital was used by the Defense Language Institute (DLI), except for the 6th floor southwest which was used by the now defunct Letterman Army Medical Center (LAMC) for medical research and animal experiments.

The PHSH is completely abandoned since 1988. The modern wings are being demolished and and the main historical buildings will be transformed into housing with construction starting in 2009, so all the graffiti you see here has been destroyed (or will be soon). See Presidio PHSH Adaptive Reuse Housing - The rehabilitation project for the PHSH.

The Presidio Hospital was really interesting place to explore, as it is very large (6 interconnected buildings, most of them 7-story), mostly intact and covered with *many* cool graffiti. It was once used as a movie set (see those Command Center Delta stencils). At night the place is rather spooky. We heard that one person gotmurdered in the PHSH in 2002.

The building in the back contains the hospital kitchen with its enormous freezers, the operating rooms and a number of X-ray machines. Many operating rooms still have floodlights and rubber tubes hanging from the ceiling. Several old X-Ray machines are rusting in place. Many of those X-ray machines and scanners were top-of-the-line multi-million dollar equipment in 1981 when the hoptital was closed, and they have just been left there, what a waste of public money!

In the eastern part of the basement, the morgue with six big drawers for the dead bodies, and the greenish autopsy room next door. Many rusted machines, pumps, pipes and tanks are still there.

The buildings are fenced and boarded and since 2006 it appears to be guarded 24/7. Police are often seen in the parking lot. Cleaning crews may be working in the buildings during working hours.

There is now an alarm (with infrared heat sensors) in the main stairway area and in the basement, and it notifies the U.S. Park Police when it triggers (it also makes quite a lot of noise!). Officer Pat Smith may send his dog after you and call his colleagues for backup. Remember, trespassing is illegal and can be prosecuted (if you get caught!). See California Penal Code 602 (k).

If the Park Police sees you going in or out of the PHSH, you are likely get arrested and to receive a $100 ticket. Recently Park Police confiscated Memory Cards from the digital cameras of trespassers, which I don't think they have the right to do.

And if you intend to do graffiti or cause any depredation, you should read 18 U.S.C. § 1361. I wonder if the Presidio Trust could get in trouble for destroying all this unique graffiti art when the buildings will be rehabilitated... Hmmm I guess not: Graffiti is detrimental to the health, safety and welfare of the community according to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Another interesting area a few yards North is the old SF-89L Nike ground-to-air missile site from the cold war era, but that's another story!

Those photos were taken in december 2004, january, february, march and july 2005, may and December 2008.

Camera used: Sony A700 DSLR and Sony DSC F828 (8 Mega-pixel).

A big thanks to Luiza Leite for telling me about this place!

Absolutely incredible, beautifully executed work. I live in the Presidio of San Francisco, and have driven by this old building many times, and been intensely curious about what the inside looked like. Thanks for the glimpse into another world!

Now you know what's inside, so you can just jump the fence and see for yourself :)

It's easy to get inside this place...

Security is increasingly tight. There's been a "mobile command center" and 2-3 uniformed guards roaming around for the last few months.

thanks for the update.

yeah, they're probably affreaid that someone would come in and steal the old X-ray machines :)

it's a shame. with increased security it is probably not worth getting inside. i wonder why they spend that much money guarding this ruin.

So from what I understand, as long as you can avoid the heat sensors, undercover guards, and roaming cops, you're okay? Harsh odds. My friends and I went there the other night and there are most definitely people watching. My advice would be to go very late and stay hidden.

What a lovely experience. I used this Greasemonkey pagination script and the PicLens Firefox extension to view the entire set in full screen sequence. And I listened to the apocalyptic and epic instrumental song "Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You Black Emperor. They fit together to fully immerse me in the place... and an amazing place at that. There's so much mystery there! So sad that it's now fortified—seems a little late for that anyways. Here's hoping there's more brave souls who can scale the walls of these castles, that all are not yet closed to adventurers seeking adventure... or those just seeking a nice vicarious experience once in awhile. Thanks for that.

I've been in this hospital, albeit legally, location scouting for a commercial about 8 or 9 years ago. Y'all should keep in mind the fact that it's full of asbestos.

Drove past it today, haven't been there in nearly 3 years before they brought in all these guards. As far as asbestos goes, there was a company that performed a thorough decontamination of the facility in 1997. This includes removal of asbestos laden materials, mercury lamps, etc. Check online, the company posted it as a case study.

However, I would still go in with a particulate respirator (3M ones can be found for about $30 at any decent hardware store), just to be on the safe side.

EASY ACCESS! Give it a try! We had a great time visiting our old Alma Mater on Sunday, 4/4/2008!

Wonderful artwork... an incredible visit. I do hope the Presidio Trust & National Park Service can pull their heads from their collective posterior and make something more meaningful with this space.

OTHER ACCESS NOTES:

Staircases are solid & easy.

Bring flashlights; you'll likely enter through the basement & will need the flame to find the stairs.

DO NOT TOUCH ANY HANGING WIRES! You never know what's hot & what's not. If you see LIGHTS & ACTIVITY -- MOVE AWAY (like on the 1st, 2nd, & Basement floors, South Wing)

Try not to make too much noise; keep your voices hushed and footsteps light. Avoid smashing things.

Have a great time! Take some pix, read & think about the art, vandalism, and decay you'll see.

Thank you for your website, it's brilliant!
Wondering, how were you able to get in to take these pictures?
I've always been an admirer of the hospital, so thanks for the peek inside. You have some great photos here.

I was there the weekend of July 4th. I was able to jump the fence and get into the premises, however, I was not able to gain access into any of the buildings or hallways. I hope swimbass can pass some info along for the next time I'm up there.

There is a police trailer and a guard in an SUV right at the front, and little guard stations through out the property were guards sit around and wait and observe. Check out the set of this location, I have a picture of one of the guards "activity logs"

The_Monacle :

You have two good shots showing (sort of) where to get in. You were around the back of the building, inside the fence when you took this shot _MG_0100 www.flickr.com/photos/26499506@N07/2674003295/in/set-7215...

Then you turned right about 70 degrees, walked another 25 or so feet, turned back toward the building, looked up, and took a high shot skyward photo _MG_0101 www.flickr.com/photos/26499506@N07/2674825052/in/set-7215... On the extreme right of this photo, about 20-30 feet from where you were standing (you can see the top edge of the building in your shot)…. there are several basement window wells full of big junk. Use the 2nd well from the left. Remove the big junk and enter through the completely broken / open window. There is a can or chair or something inside to assist your solid drop-to-the-floor (about 2-3 feet).

The guard in the red car is NOT cool; stay away from that guy. The guy with the SUV is a true professional – avoid him, too. Remember : what you plan to do IS illegal.

Try again! Have a safe & wonderful Urban Exploration Experience!

> There is a police trailer

The police trailer is a "fake". it is not a real "mobile command center", it is just an old empty RV that was painted by park police in an attempt to scare away the kids that are always trying to get in. haha!
