Al's Hat

Al is our head prop man at the theatre. It seems lately that it's always one thing after another in his life. Today, John (our head carpenter and my best pal) and I had to do a work call at noon. While at lunch, he and I recalled Li'l Abner and the guy Joe Btfsplk, and thought that fit Al lately... one thing led to another, and this hat was born. John helped me round up the parts (and modelled it for this photo with appropriate pout), and I constructed it. Some cardboard, cotton batting, 3M spray adhesive, black & grey spray paint, an old hat, and a coat hanger to hold the cloud up. ...oh, and some fishing line for the dangling raindrops too.

Al grumbled at us over it for a while, but the entire cast and crew thought it was pretty darned funny, especially when I wore it for some of my cues during tonight's show.

A bored stagehand can be a dangerous thing. ;-)

And the cloud does very distinctly have a face...heavy brows, round nose, it doesn't look very happy either!

Boots: Wagner's Ring Cycle? (shudder) I keep hoping my opera company won't do this one. Then again, my wallet does, since the overtime would be incredible! (which is probably why my opera company will never do it.)

We're most dangerous when we're bored. We've done some really silly stuff over the years I've been there, one of our pranks actually stopped a rehearsal cold because everyone (except the director) was laughing too hard.
