Stage Stop

Almost exactly between West Wendover and Ely, NV (60 miles to either town) sits the Stage Stop Bar, Cafe, Motel and RV Park.

There didn't seem to be much going on here. No cars, no people, just quiet. It seemed to be one of those lonely road places that tries to be something for everyone, in order to bring in enough cash to stay alive. I'm sure it was always hard to make a go of it out here. Ain't no easier now.

They say US-50 is the "lonliest road", but the lonely began just a few miles south of W. Wendover, long before we ever saw US-50.

Wendover Will

"Wendover Will" was created for the Stateline Casino in 1952. He was designed by the same person that designed the famous "Vegas Vic" a year earlier for the (now defunct) Pioneer Club casino in Las Vegas.

Will was built by YESCO (same builders of Vic and his twin, "River Rick"), and stands 63 feet tall. He was donated to the town of West Wendover when the Stateline changed ownership, and the town spent almost $200,000 to restore him.

Salt Flats Cafe

We stopped off for a moment to see the salt flats. Hey, it's a "gotta do" moment, ya know? We walked out onto the soft, moist salt near the cafe, and you could taste it in your mouth. There's salt everywhere. On the flats, on the road, in the air. I was tempted to drive out on to it, but when I saw some deep ruts where others had been stuck, I decided that perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate. After all, we did have to make Ely, NV for the night, and a tow bill didn't seem like a good idea.

I can't think of the Bonneville Salt Flats without thinking of Craig Breedlove and his "Spirit of America" car. He was the coolest when I was a little kid. I still remember the Beach Boys song about it all.
