Having breakfast for dinner on Tuesday

sambal sotong (squid in chilli sauce)
This was mild, but had enough flavour to be the dish of the night.
fresh cherry tomatoes
hardboiled eggs sliced in half
deepfried dried ikan bilis (little fish) *crunch!* but no peanuts =(
sliced fresh cucumber
the fiery nyonya sambal (chilli with prawn paste) for the fire-eaters... it's 30% chilli content according to the bottle (this one i didn't prepare from scratch)
nasi lemak (coconut rice)
chicken curry wanna-be with potatoes
an example of a dish of nasi lemak. this plate needs to be completed with some cucumber.
(cannot see label) store-bought fried onions
salt mill
squids in chily
yes you're right! went very well with the rice =)
Having breakfast for dinner on Tuesday by lotusutol.
On Tuesday night I cooked a meal for 7 people. I haven't cooked this much food since leaving my (large) family to come to Australia. Usually I cook for 1-2, at the most 3 people.

The Asian curry pastes and sauces take a while to prepare before cooking. The other parts of this dish, though as simple as hardboiling eggs, slicing raw cucumber or deep-frying dried ikan bilis ('small fish') need to be prepared in advance to avoid rushing.

I started preparing EVERYTHING at 5pm, and began cooking at 6.30pm, for a 7.30pm start! Whew... what a rush! Thank goodness my husband came home to help me!

The verdict: it was a hit with the gang! I enjoyed it too, because I haven't had traditional Malaysian food for a while now, living in a mainly Caucasian country town.

I will improve my chicken curry though. It had absolutely no hint of fiery-ness = not enough chilli. More like chicken stew with Asian spices!!

--- photo taken by hubby, my hands were very oily at that stage... and i was ravenous!

UPDATE: Submitted to Friday Food Fiesta (Breakfast week) as my all-time favourite breakfast.

I prefer savoury breakfast to sweet ones.
Sorry for using an old photo, but I don't think I have any chance of having it here again for a while in Bunbury! =)

if you can buy a packet of dried ikan bilis, all you need to do is deep-fry!

One of my guests was Burmese, and he told me that in Burma they also ate ikan bilis... they called them 'little fish' for obvious reasons.

d, no worries, i'd try if u did, tho i need a malaysian care package myself =) but the only thing that would last the journey would be the little fish!!

no, NL with tomatoes not considered 'western', in fact the book i got the recipe from recommended fresh tomato garnish with lettuce! Written by none other than Chef Wan himself... NL from streetside hawkers would probably not have these two ingredients because both don't last very long in a packet.

Anyway, the tomatoes were a late addition to the meal. I happened to have them in my fridge so i used them, to increase the veggie content of the meal, sort of.

We don't get fresh santan here, unless you buy the coconut whole and scrape it yourself. It's easier to use the canned santan, though you have to estimate the amount, then dilute it yourself if necessary... i also have powdered santan to add on coconut flavour, if i accidentally dilute the coconut too much. =)

rebecca, Chef Wan is westernised in his cookings.
canned santan? powdered santan? to cook NL. maybe u should consider planting coconut trees in ur backyard from now on. in few years time u can open up a fresh santan nasi lemak stall, under the coconut trees:)

liyin, i didnt know he is westernised... anyhow had another penang nyonya cookbook to follow (bought in Popular bookstore) cant recall title now...

only thing i missed out that night is roasted peanuts...

Liyin the Designer-in-Pajamas  Pro User  says:

oh ya, that's right... how can NL be NL without those crunchy roasted peanuts! :)

But hey, why not try something different then? No peanuts, no problem! Can use almond nuts, walnuts, err... whatever nut available in Aust.

If you care to get technical, any dish with tomatoes is "western," since tomatoes are orginally from South/Central America. I was so surprised to find this out the other day - that means even Italian food had no tomatoes in it before the discovery of the New World (how did they make marinara sauce? pizza?!) :P

This all looks sooo yummy, I'm going to have to hunt down a Malaysian restuarant now...

liyin: yeah, but peanuts taste better! If i had to I would substitute with cashews or some other tasty nut.

Jackie (can i call you that?): thanks for the tomato-is-western info! i didn't know that either... go ahead and visit one (restaurant that is) =) it can be quite different from the usual chinese takeaways.

Bonny: of course you can, if you promise to take your adorable daughter along with you! Of course James is welcome too =)

Reading the title again, all this is breakfast food?? Interesting, I think around here we tend to stay away from anything spicy at breakfast (well, ok, so I have a hard time getting around to eating ANYTHING for breakfast :P). I think it sounds good though, maybe I'll have to give it a try :).

ok Jacq =)
I wondered when someone would mention about breakfast!

In Malaysia we have mainly savoury, hearty breakfasts for the 3 main races: Malay, Chinese and Indian.

Nasi lemak (re: the pic) is a typical Malay breakfast. Chinese breakfast include a selection of fried noodles, savoury steamed meat-filled buns or those with sweet bean paste fillings. Indian breakfast would include a variety of roti (flat fried bread) accompanied by mild (or hot, depending on your mood) curries and sauces.

Of course sweet gluggy cakes, banana fritters, glutinous rice bundles topped with coconut and sugar are other delicacies that are eaten throughout the day, including breakfast.

Incidentally, the breakfast I was brought up with at home was largely English: bread, butter and jam! Probably due to the British colonial influence during my parents early years... =)

in most Malaysian restaurants out of Asia (e.g. Australia) nasi lemak is a specialty only cooked on certain days of the week. And no, I dont think they can sell it as breakfast outside Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia!

rbecca, would u wanna start a Nasi Lemak Group?

The 3 main races, Malay, Chinese & Indian, have their own distinctive version of nasi lemak. i normally would prefer chinese one. i like it with curry.

At the place where i stay, nasi lemak is available all round the clock:-

Morning - Malay's (basic, wrapped in banana leaves) & Chinese's (basic, with curry)

Afternoon - Malay's (with other goodies like Chicken/Beef Rendang, Ulam, Tempe, etc etc etc)

Night - Indian's & Mamak's

funny how this picture generated so many different points of view =)

I never realised that there were so many different types of nasi lemak... I prob won't know the difference!

All this while I only knew the Malay version until I came to Perth Australia, where I came across the Chinese version with curry. Even then I didn't realise i was a different version!

liyin you're more familiar with it, why don't you start it? Though they'll all probably come under the hawker food group already... =)
