early morning in south iceland...

---------------
Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.
Jökulsárlón is separated from the sea by only a short distance, and the combined action of the glacier, the river that empties from the lake, and the ocean may eventually transform it into an inlet of the sea. There are plans to prevent this from happening, since the Ring Road No.1in the area passes over the narrow isthmus.
The lake is filled with icebergs, which are calving off the
Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.
At its shore, in the summertime, one has to watch out for the skúas,
big seagulls which have their nests on the ground around the lake and
which can occasionally become aggressive.
Near Jökulsárlón, there are two other glacial lakes, Fjallsárlón and Breiðárlón.

What a cracking shot! Composition, colours and reflection. I was there a few days ago but don't have anything like this! Did you see any seals?
Lumatic (86 months ago | reply)
@ appaloosa: thanks for remembering :-))
All done...
Lumatic (86 months ago | reply)
@ krmuir: yes ! we saw them.
They were playing around in the stream of the outlet where the little river "Jökulsa" flows from the lagoon into the sea...
We sat on this black sanded shore for 2 hours and watched the icebergs drifting into the ocean.
What an experience ....!!!

@ all: Thanks for visting and all your comments :-))
Ohh, in case you ever visit this place: don't miss to watch "Fjallsarlon" and "Breidarlon". NO TOURISTIC TROUBLE there. You are "ALONE".
P.S. This was the most crowded place we've seen in Iceland (besides Rejkjavik and the airport...)
Lumatic (86 months ago | reply)
@ franklumix: yes you are right. It's an composition of four diffrent exposures.
I try to avoid the limitations of (digital) photography (limited tone range...).
I guess the human brain composes its images in a similar way. If we look at the clouds we see the shades, if we look in the darker regions we also see the shades...
Kenny Muir (86 months ago | reply)
We were there twice - heading eastward and then heading back. We were on our own for the sunset one night but a few more tourists the other. Didn't read about the other glacial lagoons until we were back in Reykjavik unfortunately. What a great place!
