Techuser- think you are right- it's lost the end of it's leg- hadn't noticed that.

Thanks azem,
I normally use a sigma 105mm EX macro lens on my eos 300D, but that's away for repair- this was shot with my emergency setup of a pentax kmount 50mm lens on about 7cms of kmount rings with the smallest ring superglued to a modded eos Tmount adapter. So the lens is completely manual including aperture.Works out at about 1.5:1

incredibly sharp. The control of the depth of field is also outstanding. It is my first time to see the month movement of a fly.

Thanks XiXiDu and photokai.
You don't get much choice about the DOF with macro shots like this- it's either very low or just about 0 so you tend to use a small aperture to try to increase it (F11-F16). Most of the face is actually eyes or sensory receptors- the mouth parts are at the bottom and mainly consist of a tongue (proboscis) which the fly uses like a drinks straw.

Thanks again all.
ocellnuri- I don't think you would enjoy using my emergency lens- It's completely manual including aperture, so I'm shooting with the aperture at F11- makes focusing a bit difficult, but the results are good!.
If you can get focus rings and a decent 50mm lens for your camera then you would be able to get the same results!

I've got the Canon 50mm 1.8 (at least decent) and a +4 closeup filter, but my stuff never comes out this sharp. Simply excellent work. Can you define what a focus ring is? I did a quick Google search and mostly got speaker parts and descriptions of the focus ring on a lens. Thanks!

Sorry the proper name is extension rings. Like these
www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUC T=JESAETCAF&...;
They would work well with your 50mm F1.8. I just got some yesterday and took this pic with the kit lens.

Using these you still get full auto operation.
