Persepolis

Persepolis by looking4poetry.
it is out. Finally on screen after more than 2 years of work. I hope it will be as good as the comics, but I'm confident Marjane Satrapi is talented enough to achieve a great adaptation of her comic series Persepolis.

There is a thing she said that i appreciated a lot : the subjectivity of her story and how it was easier for oneself to identify himself to one person rather than many. that stigmatizing Muslims people we reduce them to abstract notions that are way much easier to bomb than "human beings".

Same thing apply with Iran on which so many people will only be able to speak of the country in terms of ; scarf, women condition and human rights issues... Well those problems do exist but they're part of a bigger reality. And this reality is important to remind first. That is why i tried to avoid the painful questions (which are not questions by the way much more evidences) in my pictures. Iran does not need me to relay the sadness of its situation, Ahmadinejad does it very well by himself.

On the other hand, flickr is such a great way to stick with the basics, what do iranian eat ? of what is made their daily life ? what do they enjoy in life ? what does a happy iranian looks like ? because, as Farhang said once, happiness is their certain right too. This is to be reminded before even thinking of hazardous theories and "evilizing" that has not been particularly helped to become a more peaceful country than the one it is today - in regards to its international relationships.

So let's go back to the basics for a while now...

Salut, François.

My sister has not seen it yet, either, and I am also awaiting to hear from her, as well. Also, I am not sure when the English version is due out, and then, when it may finally arrive where are, which does not always get movies as quickly as the rest the world --even here in the USA. I am hoping one of our "art" cinemas [there are only a few] will pick this up and hope to have an audience here, too.

Thanks for the poster, though. I have the "complete" set in French and English and cannot wait to see the movie myself... :)
So this is a very nice addition to the great graphic novel series and the collection.

Yes, the Grandma character is so rude that i think the movie could get a NC-17 in the US :-)).

Ok seen it. It was very moving to see the comic book taking life on screen, and the work is very well craft. maybe it is a bit too cleaned (visually speaking) in comparison to Marjane Satrapi's style and the way her comics are published in France. But thanks God, her characters are still so deeply rooted in reality.

The movie contains real moments of poetry, even in the darkest ones. it's really beautiful. I don't like Marjane charater's voice (chiara mastroiani) but that is personal taste and i also think the music could have sounded more "persian" in the parts taking place in Iran.

The theater room was quite crowded, and people laughed a lot (Marjane has such a great sense of humor - it's irresistible) and seemed to be very pleased with it. I predict her a great success :-).

François,

Of course we have to remember that the main character is NOT Marjane herself... but another "Marjane"; well, I know that you knew that, but I see this is always asked of her:

"Marjane, c'est vous?"
"Il ya toujours quelque chose de vous dans les personnages que vous créez. Mon héroïne a beaucoup de choses en commun avec moi, mais, quand je parle d'elle, je dis « Marjane » et ce n'est pas parce que je suis schizophrène, ni parce que je me prends pour Alain Delon."

[from 20minutes.fr ; Cinéma mercredi 27 juin 2007]

Even though I may eventually see this only as a DVD, and not in a movie theatre, it is good to know the reacition of the audiences (if they are well behaved, and not disruptive of the movie itself!)

There is still no set date for the US release, according to Sony Pictures.

Thanks, François, for the reportage. :)

Actually I think they already have the casting of the English voices done, so it should take a few months (Sean Pean is playing the father).

It is not an easy task - the release of this movie - in the US. It is not specially dedicated to children even though Marjane is keeping the storytelling as simple as possible. it is not particularly tender with the US as well. characters are quite rude, taking drugs... people are not used to this on a animated movie - even though it is changing.

But to me, this is why Persepolis is so great : it is truthful to real life, with a just a slight poetry powdered upon its surface. I don't know a single person who do not like the comic-book, it should be the same for the movie.

Salut, François.

My sister told me she saw this last night... and wept at the end, in the cinema... and then again cried outside, after the movie. That perhaps says a lot. She really liked it, and knows already that she will be watching it again, and again.

Apparently the voice of "Marjane" is not yet decided [last I heard and read it was still a "secret"(!)]; Catherine Deneuve will remain the voice of the mother (in English).

I must mention that like Nima's sister, I too was brought to tears watching it, felt my heart was being squeezed!

I loved the book and I really would like to buy the DVD, but I found out that the DVD is being distributed by Sony (the same one that said that DRM increases piracy but will continue to insert DRM in their CD and DVD)
More info on DRM - www.drm.info/

Even if I bought the DVD and because I use GNU/Linux I couldn't see it in my computer because of the DRM. technically I could install some programs to make the DVD work, but that would be ilegal in my country (Portugal), so I refuse to do it.

It is really sad that a beautiful story like this, with all its implications, is being distributed by a major like Sony.
