When I saw the Sistine chapel it was dark and dirty....it hadn't been restored. NOW, it looks very bright and colorful!

Dude, you're stealing intellectual property. The RIAA say that's wrong. I can only imagine how much your illegal distribution of images from the sistene chappel is going to cost them in lost revenue from postcards, calanders and other tourist trinkets.

LOL

Seriously though, what possible reason could they have for preventing pictures? I know some museums prevent photos do to the cumulative effects of camera flash, but it's quite different when you're standing just feet away from a potentially delicate work of art and several hundred feet from the ceiling of the sistene chappel. What possible reason besides just misguided protectionism could the vatican possibly have in stopping photos being taken?

On a related note that's sort of funny... have you heard of the Cloud Gate story. It's a giant new metalic bean shaped sculpture in Chicago's new public millenium park. The city sold exclusive reproduction rights of it to a company and were using local police enforcement to prevent photography by anyone whom they thought might have a professional quality camera. Using our tax dollars to protect a private companies rights to reproductions of a public sculpture. Hillaromity. Still makes me laugh.

Unforetuneatly I wasn't around and as far as I know local photographers didn't get together with all their tripods and their most imposing cameras to descend on the spot for a "critical mass" photography event. That said I have seen several episodes of this sort of critical mass activity in other public areas to impose themselves on such as security gaurds who were instructed to stop citizens from taking pictures on their sidewalks or of their buildings in urban centers.

Not that you have any rights when you're standing in the vatican, but, you know, everyone's been really paranoid since 911 and some institutions have forgotten it's a free planet and gotten a little carried away with intimidation and harassment tactics.

I myself have been stopped several times while photography perfectly innocent material while in chicago. I've even had public officials demand to see the pictures on my camera. Oh, the great stories.

But I'm rambling. :)

Cheers!

The Vatican doesn't own the Sistine Chapel Ceiling anymore. They couldn't afford to have it restored so the private Japanese company that funded the restoration now owns the ceiling and they own the photography rights.
