Halloween 2009 by Lizette Greco

Halloween 2009

Sophia is very fond of James Patterson's young adult series Maximum Ride. The main characters in the book (the flock) are "regular" children with genetically altered bird DNA and we thought that making a pair of wings would make a great costume for this Max fan. In order to achieve the visual effect of real wings we decided to make individual feathers and sew them one by one to a quilted basic shape of the wing. There were more than 300 handmade feathers. Sophia only wore her regular street clothes but carried a pair of white wings on her back. Instead of a lengthy explanation, she just nodded when people assumed that she was an angel. I guess that saying "no, I'm a girl with wings from a book" or "a James Patterson character", or a "mutant" as they call themselves in the book might be confusing for most grown ups on Halloween night.

Halloween 2009

Enzo is into all things medieval from making and playing with swords and shields to reading about and learning to speak dragonese. He wanted to be a knight for Halloween so we worked on making an armor out of cardboard. We altered some clothes so he could have a silver t-shirt/ chain maille. He grew more and more excited about every piece of his armor that we completed. However, wearing armor (like the real thing) Halloween night, turned out to be cumbersome when you are a child who just wants to run around with friends and trick-or-treat for candy.

Medieval Knight
salvaged cardboard
altered clothes
papier mache
duct tape

*He made his own shield and received a pair of wooden swords for this birthday last September.
