The Löbmann Family

My grandfather, Martin Loebmann
The Löbmann Family by mamamusings.
This photo was taken in 1916. My grandfather, Martin (in the medic's uniform), was the oldest of five children. His younger brother Salo became an industrial chemist and emigrated to Brazil; there were also three daughters whom my father never met and whose names he cannot recall--they went to live in Australia.

--

Update, 2/06: My second cousin, Daniel Loebmann, has posted a comment below. He's Salo's grandson, and has provided information to us about the Brasilian branch of the family--which apparently includes the three girls shown above, who eventually moved to Brazil, as well.

They all emigrated? Was that because of the war? Did your great grandparents emigrate, too?

(I'm curious now that you've started telling the story!)

Yes, they emigrated because of the war. (Or, more accurately, because of the Nazis.) My grandfather's family was Jewish.

I don't know if my great-grandparents emigrated, but perhaps my father will weigh in on this. (He just joined Flickr, too.)

My grandfather left Germany for America (via Holland) in 1940, intending to send for my grandmother and father--but the borders closed down before he could. He ended up working as a doctor in a Japanese internment camp in the US during the war--an ironic post for a Jew who barely escaped Nazi Germany.

Photos that I'll be posting this week show my father and grandmother during their difficult time in Germany in the 1940s, and their eventual escape to France and then America.
