Farewell to Borneo

Farewell to Borneo

This was taken from the bar at my hotel in Kota Kinabalu. The sunset initally looked like it would be a bit of a fizzer because there was to much cloud but as the sun dipped below the horizon it lit everything up like the sky was on fire. It would be spectacular if sunset happened when the tide was high, as it happened the tide was at its lowest and the mud flats stretched out for a good 300 metres from the shore. It was a beautiful spot to unwind for a couple of days before I had to say goodbye to beautiful Borneo.

This was taken at the Botanic Gardens in Sandakan, although it isn't a perfect shot I was still happy with the way that it turned out.

Proboscis Monkey (Female)

Proboscis Monkey (Female)

This is a female proboscis monkey, they're endemic to the tropical forests of Borneo. The males have a much bigger nose and the more dominant the male the bigger it seems to be. This was taken at a wildlife park outside Sandakan, Sabah. It was more than a little sad really because the park is a small island of forest surrounded by palm oil plantation and both are owned by the same corporation. I guess it is better than no forest at all but not by much.

Stop Thief!

Stop Thief!

A couple of these tiny squirrels got into the bananna before the hornbills could fly down. I guess in part because we don't have anything that is directly comparable to a squirrel at home they were quite interesting. As tiny as these ones were they were nothing on the pygmy squirrels that we saw in Sarawak. They were the size of a mouse with a tail about the same length as their body yet they could jump incredible distances. I didn't stand a chance of getting a photo of one of them but I found this one on the net www.arkive.org/least-pygmy-squirrel/exilisciurus-exilis/i...
