Is the suggestion that women are forced to wear high heeled shoes, and that this is also a form of sexual assualt?

Interesting reading.

It did not seem to mention the link between the shoes and sexual molestation though.

I kind of thought that it was a bit of a poor analogy since high heelded shoes are a suffering tht women to an extent take upon themselves (many would be upset if their freedom to wear high heels were taken away) whereas rape is a suffering tht women do not take upon themselves, although some people like to blame victims as if they did.

I guess there is no need to take the analogy that far but I worry about the subliminal message being given to participants.

I don't think the participants are getting any mixed messages. This event is about getting people involved in the solution to a problem that, at first, may not seem to directly affect them. This requires them to step outside themselves...to empathize...to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes". Which they literally do.

Add to that the goals of creating public awareness about gender violence and raising money for a sexual violence resource center, and, in my opinion, it all makes a lot of sense. The mile walk is uncomfortable for those wearing high heels -- it's meant to be a sacrifice, and they have sponsors supporting their efforts. It's also a big spectacle that prompts anyone passing by to take a look and find out what's going on.

I see your point about rape as a suffering that women don't take upon themselves. But I don't think that taking action on this issue requires the activist to withstand suffering that they do not take upon themselves. A slightly flawed analogy works well enough for me.
