The Lights I

The Lights I by Linus Gelber.
The 9/11 World Trade Center memorial lights in lower Manhattan arrive quietly this September. They will be live with fanfare only on September 11, but last night they were blazing skyward in a test run.

Each year they have the power to make me still for a few moments. They are a true memorial; they make me remember.

This picture has been spotted as high as #8 on the Flickr daily Interestingness charts.

You're right; quiet, but still so powerful. A lovely capture.

Very nice. Have you ever seen 25th Hour? The montage over the opening credits does great things with these lights, too.

This is an interesting perspective on a powerful memorial. Often, you see photos of the "Tribute in Light" that use the Manhattan skyline, where it is most obvious to us non-New Yorkers what they are trying to replace. This shot reminds you that the towers were integrated in the daily lives of people in Manhattan, even if it was just a view of them between other buildings.

This is very surreal. I've never seen lighting like that. It almost looks like some sort of Hollywood special effect.

ps. I posted a reply to your Angelica comment.

They make me remnember a lot of things. It was my subway stop for nearly a year. I took my brother and his wife there to the GBOE, not to mention a third date that went quite well. Bought birthday and Xmas presents at the bookstore downstairs. Once had a job interview that cratered, I think somewhere around the 60th floor. {sigh}

Thanks, oblivions - I appreciate your "yes" votes.

And thanks to all of you for looking. These pictures woke up a lot of old feelings, and it's good to have them out in public this way.

Matt, I have not seen 25th Hour - one of these days, I hope. I'm intrigued to see these in motion.

Caro, tripods are essential. This is a 4-second exposure, taken with a tripod and using the timer to trigger the shutter; some of the others I took that night were 10 and 15 seconds long. Not really a situation for hands on the camera!

I have never heard of these lights before they are incredible. This is the best of you lights series. The angles and framing of your composition has given them real power.

Heather, and others further back - thanks for coming to take a look. This is one of the images I have on my business card. There's something about it.

Laurent, the Tribute in Light is only on once a year, during the night of September 11th. I think it used to go off that night around midnight or 1:00 a.m. This year it was supposed to run until dawn; I don't know if it did, though I know it was still lit at 1:00.

There is funding for the lights through next year. After that, either new funding needs to be found or the skies will stay dark.
