Oxford Barns

I have passed these old barns so many times since moving to Oxford, that I promised myself that one day I would stop the car, walk into the woods, take a decent photo, and paint them.

I finally did.

While these two structures sit close to the road, the woodlands and traffic make stopping somewhat risky. One quiet day early this month, C and I managed a quick, hurried stop. The barns somewhat more decayed than I've painted here - but that's another painting.

C's jam, our dinner with guests, music, walks - all went beautifully yesterday. Fabulous company, including my son who's improving daily, fun and laughter, sun-shining and warm temps all contributed to a really enjoyable and blessed day. It's been a very welcome respite.

Today I dash into the office, teach a bit, and then dash again to the airport to pick up my guest for the week. Art classes begin in the morning, so I'll be scarce on the 'net this week. With my crazy schedule I don't often get the chance to attend art classes, and so this week is a true gift and much anticipated time to actually WATCH others create and ask questions.

Lin, I'm glad you chose to paint these! You wouldn't believe how many barns I wish I had photographed and painted in my younger days. Now so many have disappeared, falling down or being torn down with the passing of time. The ones being replaced are being replaced with metal tractor and equipment sheds. Not nearly as interesting to paint as those beautiful old barns build back in the 18th and 19th centuries. And I can't even find the first two I did paint, one oil and one wc, which were of neighbor's barns. You are lucky to still have these around. At one time barns were considered a trite subject by people who didn't have them in their neighborhood begging to be drawn and painted. Thank goodnesss many artists ignored the avante gard set and used barns as subject matter. They have helped to preserve their history, even as the familiar old barn passes from history.
Beautiful painting. I still have NC on my top lists of places to visit and you are making me want to add Oxford to the list. I think there I can still get a real sense of how NC looked when my Ross, Tucker, Grant, Durham, and other ancestors lived there. They weren't in Granville Co., but were mostly in the same general area, Pitt, Lenoir, Martin and Caswell counties.
Your paintings make me see NC of another day. Thanks!

Hope you are enjoying the Karlyn Holman workshop. After your last year's workshop, I bought the book you recommended and the DVD! To keep me from turning bright acid green with envy because I can't be at the workshop, I plan to watch the DVD tonight. Also, have watched a Terry Madden DVD, Texture Tips today and plan to find time for a Frank Clarke DVD this week. He's an Irish artist that does TV painting shows in acrylic and watercolor. This DVD is from the library and is work from a painting trip to the US.

Lin, are you sure that building on the right was originally a barn? Looks like it was a house at one time. Is it log ? Some older buildings had a sideroom added on. My dad's store had an addition like this on the side. There were 3 rooms in that part. The orginal store owner lived in that part while the house across the road was being built. I grew up in the house. The store was built in 1916 andf the house in 1917.

The building on the left is also unusual for a barn. Maybe it also had a different purpose. Do you know anything of the history of this property? I think it probably has a very interesting history!
