The Ghosts of No Evil

The Ghosts of No Evil by lindes.
Buy prints of this and other work at ImageKind; my website: David Lindes Photography

No "photoshop magic" here. A little tweaking of colors and such, but that's it.

(It's just a long exposure and multiple manually-triggered flash firings.)

I sense no evil, here. Maybe these hand signals work to ward off evil? Then again, I've gotten comments that it's "creepy" and "spooky", so who knows?

Also, I'm noticing that this image looks much better to me large...

See also: See Evil and See Evil (in Red) (and even There's Evil Around..., or whatever I end up naming it long-term)

Strobist details:

1 Canon MT-24EX flash (both heads) fired (alas I don't recall power setting) three times manually during a 10 second exposure.
This photo has people in it. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

Creepy, huh? OK, that's fair. I don't happen to agree (I just think it's fun). That's OK, though, we don't have to agree. ;-)

I like the long exposure and the concept.

I am glad you are finding no problems in finding good subjects (including people willing to pose).

Heh, I'm not sure I would say I'm having _no_ problems in that area, but I'm definitely having some success, too.

Katie is a singer (and I quite like her singing, by the way), who I took some pictures of at a show she performed in a while back (see my Live set, and/or my katie davis tag for some shots from that night), who asked me to do some portraiture of her for publicity use. I may post some of the more mundane results from that shoot here as well, but we also did a few shots on the more creative side -- this being one I'd wanted to do for a long time -- and since this shot was for me, rather than for her (though Katie, if you're reading this, you could certainly use this image if you want to), it got first dibs on a flickr upload. ;-)

Great shot. Would make a great CD cover. Its fantastic you did it all in one exposure, nice work.

Saw this from your thread on multiple personalities, I would say it fits. :o)

How I did it, more "slowly" (it's text, so read as quickly or slowly as you like ;-):

(1) place camera on tripod

(2) compose shot; focus

(3) figure out exposure settings that'll work, including (a) having enough time to pull this off, (b) getting good exposure of the background, (c) settings for brightness of the flash (both flash level and aperture);

(4) set up timer (I used the Canon TC-80N3, but a self timer would work in this case.)

(5) stand off to the side of, and in front of, the subject for each of the three poses, and fire a flash (in this case, the Canon MT-24EX, but just about anything with a manual trigger would probably do OK), have the subject move to the next spot and re-pose, flash again, and then repeat once more;

(6) try not to stand still for long at any one spot while holding the flash -- dark clothing also probably wise, but I wasn't especially doing much with that.

Hopefully that all makes sense -- if you're left with any questions, do feel free to ask.

David, this is a great shot. I ready your explanation of how you did this. I pretty much understand what you are talking about.

Have one question, though. When you are firing the flash, are you holding the flash away from the camera onto the subject or is the flash mounted on your camera?

I have done something similar to this but with different outcomes. I will have to experiment with my new lens and see if I can replicate my previous experiment and post it. Great shot.

I love it. You get top honors from me on this one.

lindes  Pro User  says:

Thanks, Jenni. Yes, please feel free to point me at any experiments along these lines that you have.

As for the flash, I am holding it, completely detached from the camera (and triggering it just by pressing the test button on the flash unit itself), and close to the subject. Her face is well lit because the flash was about a foot or so above (and in front of) her, but then as the distance gets greater and greater, the lower portions of her body are less and less well lit. In fact, I'm not sure but I suspect that the only reason you can see her legs and feet at all is that she stayed still for a couple seconds in each spot, so the natural light had enough time to reflect a bit -- rather than the light from the flash. I'm not certain of that, but that's what I'm thinking.

Cheers.

And yeah, perhaps it is. It is a cliche thing anymore, for sure... I just figured I had a slightly different take on it, and wanted to try that.

Anyway, for anyone who feels that way about it, I refer you to See Evil. :-)

I love this! It's so surreal. It's making me think I should read the manual that came with my flash. I had no idea you could do something like this--a real eye-opener :)

lindes  Pro User  says:

Thanks. :-) Yeah, it's actually relatively easy to do... most (all?) external flashes have a little button that will fire the flash manually. You don't get TTL metering or anything, because the camera and the flash aren't talking at all, but there are other ways to adjust things to get proper exposure. That part does take a bit of playing, I suppose, but that part is so much easier with digital, so... :-)
