liminal: Hear, being here
Hear being here is an ongoing research project that explores the potential of adopting the principles of ‘active’ acoustics systems to create reverberation behaviours that might confound our expectations of an existing physical space. Through a series of architectural experiments, we have been investigating the perceptual effects of manipulating the acoustical behaviour of a space by means of artificial reverberation. Ultimately, our objective is to design virtual architectural environments on the premis of their sonic characteristics. Our interest in ‘active’ acoustic systems then, is for their potential to create acoustic behaviours that would be impossible to realise using conventional acoustic treatments.

We have carried out 3 installations so far of increasing complexities and in doing so have explore the potential of subverting the natural acoustical behaviour of the space. In doing this we were able to devise a listening context in which visitors were implicitly invited to ‘listen to themselves listening’.
