Day 17: Firefox 3

Hey! I know them. There's my puppy dog :D
Day 17: Firefox 3 by shutterbugMike.

Mozilla has released Firefox 3. And while it is noticeably faster and sports an interesting new look, I was really looking forward to it because finally a version of Firefox would support color profiles! It is frustrating to upload photos and find they look nothing like what you saved them as (even when using the web-standard sRGB color profile). Safari had the color profile support from the start - I don't know what took Mozilla so long. And apparently, in their wisdom, the default setting for this support is "off." Imagine my surprise (and further frustration), until I figured out how to turn it on.

For those interested (and I don't know why anyone wouldn't want this turned on), to enable Firefox 3 color profile management:
• enter "about:config" in the Firefox address bar
• click "I'll be careful, I promise" button
• type "gfx.color" in the filter field to limit its display to relevant entries.
• double click gfx.color_management.enabled entry to change the value to true
• restart Firefox
• voilà! colors the way they were supposed to look.
This photo has notes. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

In our tests, we saw a 10-15% performance hit with color profile support turned on, which is why the default is "off". More background here: www.dria.org/wordpress/archives/2008/04/29/63 3/

Thanks for the info! At least it makes sense now. And I'll take the small performance hit in exchange for true colors. Hopefully that will be ironed out in future releases.

Yep, it's an iMac, previous generation (before they went aluminum & grey). How much I get for it? As in money? CPU speed? Satisfaction? LOL

Well, I don't think I'd get much for it now ;) It's a first-generation iMac G5, and the base model (1.6 ghz...wow I feel so slow just typing that!). Going on three and a half years old. But macs tend to last long, and I tend to run them into the ground. Despite power capacitors blowing on it two years ago, and its entire main battery replaced, it's doing fine and aside from a little lagging in Photoshop I can't complain. I was contemplating replacing it with a mac laptop this summer but decided to wait for the new year (or maybe until this one shuffles off to the computer graveyard, LOL).

Heh, heh. Yeah, I've always wanted a mac...mainly because it's the ultimate digital darkroom workspace. I'll have to look into it one day.

I'm really liking FF3, although there are a few of my add-on's that are not compatible at the moment. And they were ones I'd grown accustomed to having :P Hopefully they'll be updated soon.

I've never really had color profile problems, but I followed your instructions and changed the setting anyway. I figured why not :)
