Getting on Brdway car (LOC)

Scandalous! Or is this an early attempt at a mini-skirt?
lieutenant's stripes
Date: 7/11/13 in reverse
In point of fact, this style was called a "hobble skirt."

wow... can't imagine getting on and off one of those things in all those clothes--especially that long, fitted skirt. And you KNOW there's a couple layers and a corset/girdle of some sort under all of that, too!

This view is Herald Square facing south down Broadway

go to this ny map from 1879
hdl.loc.gov/loc.gmd/g3804n.pm005990
"The city of New York. Will L. Taylor, chief draughtsman."

that map is pretty nice because it shows streetcar lines, and elevated railroad lines, and various landmarks in miniature detail, plus the LOC has used mrsid technology to make it zoomable.

on the map, the broadway trolley intersects with an el line (the sixth avenue el) at herald square. if you then compare photos from today with this pic, you see the McAlpin Hotel in the background. the hotel was built in 1912. here's a 1914 pic of that corner

"Broadway" is spelled out clearly on the photo; LOC must be using some special kind of titling software that plucks out vowels . . . .

Hi, Wystan,

You're right that the word Broadway is clearly spelled out in the image. The caption was taken from the original Bain Collection caption card or negative sleeve. We'll provide a more complete spelling when we update the record.
