Great older (colourised or colour ) shot and increases the evidence , along with language groupings classified as Finnic in the Finno-Ugric . Also of the yurt-like or tipi-like dwelling, nomadic cultures travelled both west ( these Sámi) and east (Amer-Indian) from the ancient Eurasian steppes or Siberian tundra.Cultural similarities .Great use of all materials including their art and clothing.

I cannot recall seeing an earlier color print. I mean, this is photochrom, it is NOT hand painted. It is quite nice.

I cannot imagine living in Lapland of Norway or Finland in these tents. It amazes me that any peoples remained in the northern zones instead of migrating south.

Amazingly large smokeholes at the top. Interesting how population pressure can force people into relatively inhospitable environments.

Amazing they could live in such harsh conditions and make such beautiful things for practical use! Look at the detail on their clothes and the baby-carrier. I wish the picture could be viewed even bigger. I'll bet they wasted nothing and made the best use of everything they had. Should be a good lesson for those of us who dare consider ourselves to be living a "green" life.

These tents are surprisingly warm. I've spent a lot of time in the far north of Norway, in a tent eating dry reindeer. Gosh, this is making me homesick...

The photo is amazing, I am so glad I found it!

Population pressure on the Scandinavian peninsula? I don't think so.

The Saami people depends on travelling with their reindeer for sustenance (and many of them still do). The animals live in the north, so the people live in the north.

The "tent" is called a lavvo. Just because it looks a bit like a yurt or a teepee, this is of course not evidence of any relation. I think this is a quite natural structure to erect for shelter if you are travelling, and have access to sticks and hides. This sort of portable structure could just as well be invented independetly by different nomadic cultures.

The county was formerly known as Finmarkens amt or Vardøhus amt, and since 2002, has had two official names:

Finnmark (Norwegian) and Finnmárku ( Sámi languages). It is part of the Sápmi region, which spans four countries, as well as the Barents Region, and is the largest and least populated county of Norway.

hi everybody! let me put it straight...

we do NOT live in LAVVOS enymore, we acctually llive in real normal HOUSES theese days..

NOT every saami is a reindeer herder..some of us have normal jobs..

but; ¨

we have kept our culture, language and traditions strongly and proudly trough forced religious, and cultural wipeouts..

we have now our own schools, politic, and the most important ; we have the Norweigan governments senceere apolygi for theyre treatment of the saami people.

if you want too learn more, wisit www.samediggi.no for more!

trialanderrors: Great work making a large HQ-image of the picture, all though I'm not sure I'd agree on the contrast, that are too harsh. The original is softer and better in a way.
