Unsoiled shirts, clean jeans, shiny shoes with spotless soles, not a speck of oil, grease or dirt in sight. History records that many women worked during the second world war, quite possibly not these though. However, I do like the photos.

It's a photo-shoot! If you knew you were getting your photo taken, and possibly seen by thousands of people - you'd want to be seen at your best, wouldn't you...? And the photographer's brief would have been to show the workers and their surroundings in the best possible light, possibly for recruiting purposes.

Too good for the 1940s? Why? You only need to look at the cinematography of the movies of that era to see that those guys knew all there was to know about lighting and framing a scene. There is a modern tendency to assume that the utmost pinnacle of everything is right now, and all that came before must somehow be un-developed and inferior. Not so...

this must be fake not even the best cameras back then could have produced as sharp and exact curves and colours like a digital cam with 10 MP can - this one is a new one and there is no doubt about it.

and since I am a technician and really do know about all this stuff better shut up and just admit that either the government has faked you or you are the faker here.

Ok there is one exception if this was a Hasselblad Camera...but since you have not written which camera it was I take it's a standard cam - and those make my statement above legal and valid.

This is not from a 35mm slide but from a large format camera using sheet film. Perhaps the image printed here was from a photo of a print made from it on museum grade paper.
By the way, most women employed in factories were welders and not riveters because welding is a lot easier to learn quickly. Riveters were mostly people who were already riveters before the war; i.e, men.

Crossdouble: Ever heard of a 4x5 or an 8x10 large format camera? The negative those produce is cleaner and sharper than any digital image any camera will ever be able to make, ever. Next time know what your talking about so you don't look like an idiot.

well the problem is, 1st: that the idiot is you and not me

and 2nd that I do not go down such a level and believe what some (back then) state influenced and highly controversial archive says.

Even more I am not so dumb and take photos home scan em and upload em.

Seems like this....."museum" has found the right brainsize for their pocket size: XXS

It's clearly an image from a 4X5 camera--see the index marks at the top right, which are there so that darkroom techs can determine the film type by touch. I'm not certain, but I believe that this is a Kodachrome transparency. The lenses of the day were certainly capable of this sort of sharpness, and the lighting was most likely done with floods; strobes hadn't been invented and flash bulbs wouldn't have been an ideal solution. This photo was more than likely staged, as part of a "photo shoot" intended to generate photographs to encourage public support for the war effort. But it was probably taken on-site, at the Douglas plant in Long beach, California.

Yes people, it's *really* old, I can tell. For one I collect vintage clothing, and many times Hollywood can't even get the look right.

I have an 11x13 color shot of Vivien Leigh in '39. The detail and clarity is simply amazing... Of course I know it's her, and it can no way be a digital.

While these may have been posed photos, many of the women were extremely clean and proper, hair always done in those days. They were thrown into the workfield but still would never think of going out with wrinkled clothes, etc.
Plus, I can see dirt on their fingers.
Excellent, excellent shots!!
