Giant statue of Genghis Khan

No accurate portraits of Genghis exist today, and any surviving depictions are considered to be artistic interpretations. Persian historian Rashid-al-Din recorded in his "Chronicles" that the legendary "glittering" ancestor of Genghis was tall, long-bearded, red-haired, and green-eyed. Rashid al-Din also described the first meeting of Genghis and Kublai Khan, when Genghis was shocked to find that Kublai had not inherited his red hair. Also according to al-Din Genghis' Borjigid clan, had a legend involving their origins: it began as the result of an affair between Alan-ko and a stranger to her land, a glittering man who happened to have red hair and bluish-green eyes. Modern historian Paul Ratchnevsky has suggested in his Genghis biography that the "glittering man" may have been from the Kyrgyz people, who historically displayed these same characteristics.

Did you work on the picture? The metallic surface suggests me it should have turned out either darker or much lighter against the sky. Anyway, great result!

: Yeah sky and clouds are easy to get great shots of if you go to Mongolia.

Yes I cropped it (to rotate it). I also pushed the light a bit. The metallic should be lighter but I just did global edits. I have other shots of the statue that I plan on posting. I will try to keep the metallic colors intact on these.

Especially when you consider that it's in the middle of almost nowhere.

...can't see the status from satellite, but nice to see a bit more context. Is there anything else nearby, or status is alone in the empty areas?

    13. Ludovic Hirlimann (20 months ago | reply)

The status sits on top of a museum , there's a parking nearby. And that's it, the surroundings is steppe. I think they have plans to build other stuff around - but can't remember what. In the statue they play a movie about how it was build - the narrative sounded very propagandish from the soviet era.
