Walking in the Mist

Walking in the Mist

Walking by this reservoir on Mt Tabor I was struck by the scene's serenity and the mysterious touch of mist in the air. The mist makes it look like morning, but it was actually late afternoon.

River Under a Boardwalk

River Under a Boardwalk

I thought it was interesting today to observe this situation, since for the last few days I have been connected with a project (rather the opposition to the project) that is proposing a boardwalk in a floodplain. This photo demonstrates how plant life (grasses and sedges in this case) dies off under a boardwalk due to the lack of light. This leaves bare ground underneath that - in this case - became the channel for floodwaters.

Johnson Creek and Engineers

Johnson Creek and Engineers

It was and interesting day today. After the big downpour, I went out with my friend, Dave Ek, to look at what was happening on Johnson Creek. As I suspected, it was flooding - but only slightly onto the roads. The stream was flowing very full, though and water was filling the floodplain about to the brim of this recently constructed berm. The minimal flooding was partly due to the recent flood control and riparian enhancements that were desgined by a team including these two engineers, Rose Horton and Gary Wolf of OTAK Inc. who were out checking out their project. It was quite by accident that I encountered them and I found it interesting to note that I also worked for OTAK doing a similar type of work back in the early 90's. The OTAK Water Resources Group was a completely different group of people in those days - but some of the folks I worked with, Roger Sutherland and Seth Jelen, had done the preliminary analysis that led to the project that Rose and Gary are standing on.

Celebrate Martin!

Celebrate Martin!

While visiting Heather in Oakland, we went over to San Francisco. This waterfall and the memorial to MLK was one of the great experiences in the big city. This photo is a composite of three photos that I took there: the waterfall; the text; and the image of Martin Luther King

Due to space on the photo I had to truncate some of the text of the quote. The full quote is:
“No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Does it yet?

Heather and her "friend" with Dresses by Heather

Heather and her "friend" with Dresses by Heather

Heather's "friend" is actually behind a display window and Heather was standing near me in front of the window. The mannequin is wearing a knit dress that Heather made for one of her classes in fashion design at the Academy of Art University. Heather is wearing dress that she made for herself only a few days earlier. The display is at the store and gallery space at the Academy of Art University.
