This photo is the work of an artist and is their interpretation. I like it for what it is and value their opinion. Thank you also for capturing this for all to see.

This is a wonderful and important record of the moment, Jackman Chiu! I just sent it, with attribution, to my daughter in Seattle, along with some stories people are sharing at rabble.ca. She's been away from Canada for a long time, and this prompted a very warm and happy conversation from 3000 miles away.
Somehow I'm glad you're just a photographer for the fun of it. Obviously, you could do more with it if you wanted.
Missing Jack a lot! But glad that it's sparked something magical among people.

Thank you for sharing. I had no idea of the size of the chalking.
May Jack Layton live on in Canadians paying tribute to him.

Thank you so much for posting this !!!
This simple photograph speaks volumes about how many people's lives Jack Layton touched. Whether or not you agreed with his, and his party's political views, one has to admire Jack for his honesty and tenacity he never wavered from during his political career. He was a man who stood for what he believed in, whether it was popular or not. He was a politician who truly TRIED to make a difference on so many issues. Jack upheld a level of professionalism; he never forgot his roots, or the reason he was elected.
He served his city, his province, and his country with virtue and integrity.
Thank you so much Jack, you have been an inspiration to so many, and your legacy will be remembered for many generations

I've taken a few shots this week and was there at lunch but didn't see the full perspective until a flickr friend and work colleague pointed me to your shot. Have to try and grab a shot before I head home.
Like some of the comments here, I love the detail in the chalk words, but the buildings don't feel right. Great work and point-of-view.

I did not cry when they announced his death (anger mostly) but when I saw your pictures the dam burst. Thank you.

This is amazing, and makes me proud to be to be Canadian. It had nothing to do with the image but everything to do with who Canadian people are and what they stand for. Regardless of your political view Jack Layton did something great! I hope he is looking down and can see the positive changes he was responsible for.

Thank you for this wonderful image. Spare yourself any consideration from those who criticised the tech of it..pure rubbish. It is an honest image and a wonderful one for me to cherish and to show my non Canadian friends what our great nation feels towards Jack and how we chose to honour him. Wow - I don't know HDR or the photography critique of many, but I did know Jack and I know when something very powerful has affected so many people. What a wonderful use of public space - it is a fleeting image, a record of how a life of a wonderful and caring politician has affected so many people - with messages of condolence, gratitude and hope for the future. The chalk messages are the most important part of this photo - witness to the emotions behind the chalk, that have also been captured in the tender words, so respectfully done in a public space with chalk, washed away by rain. The buildings and the light are just the landscape around them. Thank you. Patricia File

What a great photo! I'm glad you captured this city's outpouring of thanks to Jack.
This is a keeper, HDR or not, Ford's reaction or not!
Actually, I too like the HDR effect.
Try Nik's version of HDR software for easily limiting effects where you don't want them if you must.
Jack wouldn't have minded us photographers discussing how to improve our art and skills. He'd be all for it!! Especially if we used the power of the photo to help deliver messages of social justice, to highlight worthy human accomplishments, to help the less fortunate around us and to encourage positive change for a kinder world.
Your photo helps to highlight this city's respect for Jack's life accomplishments and when the chalk is long gone, your photograph will still be around to gently remind us of this good man.
Thank you, Jackman.

Amazing how many people opened their hearts and wrote about the sad parting of a great Canadian.
