Buzz Off

I love this picture in the large view. In the large view, it is possible to see not only the facets in the bee's eye, but the contours in the pollen! It is really quite amazing.

The prickly pear cacti were blooming when I was at the Grand Canyon, and in nearly every flower there was a bee picking up pollen, and staying safe from the environment. That morning it was maybe 60°F with a wickedly strong wind.

100mm macro. Since these bees were so involved in crawling around inside the flower, and staying out of the cold, windy weather, it was pretty easy to shove the lens hood right up to the edge of the flower. Getting a good, quality image with a sharp, motionless subject took more time. (;

To get an idea of what the weather was like that day, the previous photo in my stream was made a little earlier--half an hour or an hour. All those dark clouds eventually built up later that night to a spectacular sunset thunderstorm over the South Rim.
