"Undercover Readers" by Les Bryant 2009

Reading in secret - I have been wanting to do a painting on this theme for a long time. This is a scene I can really identify with. As a child I would often get so engrossed in some exciting book that I would be unable to tear myself away from it. So I would turn off the lights make a small tent under my covers and read by the light of a flashlight. By reading under the covers, I could read in secret, evade detection from my parents and read well past my bedtime.
The big difference between this painting and my memories is that I did not have a dog until years later.
This painting is a composite of several sources including Karen Ackles
beautiful black and white photo www.flickr.com/photos/kma_images/446455884/
and my imagination.
I find it strange that almost everyone I showed this painting to have had the same reaction, they say "I think I have seen that painting before" For me this painting was an original composition and I wonder why they all think they had seen it before?... or am I just triggering similar memories?

My dog "Snuggles" was more gray and white, this painting needed some color so painted this dog with a little more color than Snuggles had, but it does resemble her.
