Worth the 5am start for this picture

Worth the 5am start for this picture by TabascoKid.
www.leonneal.com/blog/2009/04/16/beached/

A Police Officer walking past two of the shipping containers washed up on the beach at Branscombe, Devon following the beaching of the cargo ship MSC Napoli after it was holed during storms on Sunday, 21st January 2007. The ship is carrying almost 2,400 containers, about 150 of which are said to hold hazardous chemical substances. The drifting vessel was being towed to Portland Harbour in Dorset for a salvage operation, but the Maritime and Coastguard Agency decided to beach it in Lyme Bay, near Sidmouth, instead, following the structural failure. The area is a World Heritage Site and also known as the Jurassic Coast.

Did the Times send you on this job or do you go under your own steam in the hope that they will pay you for the pics? Just interested in how it all works.

Thanks for all your comments! PC, I'm now working more for AFP, the French National newspaper (and third largest agency in the world apparently..) than the Times. Today was for AFP, hence them being used on the BBC site (and HOPEFULLY every newspaper you can find tomorrow..) :)

Thanks for the extra info, Lyttelton.

Joe Dunckley, I've added your extra info into the caption. Thanks.

It makes you wonder why it ended up here, it was an incident which happened in French waters, they were co-ordinating authorities and we get the pollution and the rest of the rubbish and distruction that goes with it. Good photo and like you say worth the effort.

It is not against the law to take anything from the beach but you must register the merchandise so that the owner can recover it if they want.

Latest news is that whatever the looters claim and even if they fill in the forms handed out by Police here, if at ANY point in the future BMW decide to get them back, they become BMWs property again.

Should be fun.

As I write that, the whole pub is discussing what BMW spares they've just collected.. ;)

Trevor, they changed salvage law in 1995 so it doesn't belong to the first person to get to it anymore.

Don't really see how it's enforcable though, by the logic of that you should be able to force ship owners to clear up the beaches from the crap they dump overboard.

Ship owners are responsible for the clear up eventually. Any costs incurred by local authorities or agencies such as the MCA can be recovered via the insurers.

This is not classed as flotsom but wreckage and that under maritime law still belongs to the owners or insurers.

On another vein the French must be laughing at us for taking over this incident, lets face it this lot could have ended up on the Normandy beaches had they continued to co-ordinate the incident. I wonder what idiot decided to accept it from them.
