graffiti history

graffiti history by lensjockey.
I've had this picture for awhile. I just saw a similar view in a book on graffiti writers. some of the old graffiti is still there, and new graffiti. the lot used to be asphalt. and you can't shoot like you used to on the bridge because of all the fencing and removal of flooring.

I agree. It's very hard for me to think of it as a crime, I mean, I know it is, but I love it so much. this is years of interesting coverage. and I prefer this look to the newer more complicated things. Frankly, I really think more attention should be paid to the different kinds of marks. it all means something to somebody. I wish I had time-lapse footage of all of this going up over the years.
thanks - on behalf of the graf.

Canon Man52 - of course grafitti existed before, but when I think of grafitti I think of Lascaux and NYC. the exquisite and highly textured layering of the grafitti here is so attractive to me. It's like a form of communal abstract expressionism. I could look at this shot for hours just because I love what's in it so much, and it's just these buildings you can see from the bridge - but they are just so sartorially choice.

so everybody agrees here that graffiti are beautiful.
very well
(personally I don't like graffiti on the coloseum or right Monna Lisa's cute face, but this is just a matter of taste, ehehe)
I am fascinated by their urban expressionism

it's all in the execution of course, but a little grafitti makes things look better to me, like spicy NYC, like a condiment for buildings and - anything...

a condiment, that's great. compared to some of the architecture that's gone up in the city in the last 20 years, the bland, cheap boxes that really suck, these guys are the saviours. they should be hired to coat the town. i don't really know what's gone up in the last few years. there used to be a school playground wall near me in brooklyn covered with amazing stuff, i would worship it.

hi - some is so beautiful. the calligraphy is so elegant sometimes. I love a really good tag the most. sometimes I like it where someone's painted over some grafitti so you have these off colors over the original paint. I did a series of gouache illustrations for this thing I was working on - really elaborate - and then a couple of years later I marked them up with a fat pen - in layers - you can't read what the writing is, but I showed it to some guy and he didn't get it. there is something about the clash of uh, two entities. the building and the grafitti become one... I think they are very interesting psychologically. they are human marks (for whatever the reason) - and NYC has the best. oh yeah, and the new "architecture?" - I wish I could find some I really love.

jrish look at the tags for the picture to the right, it says NYC, Spicy NYC, Brooklyn, Williamsburg and from the Wiliamsburg bridge. alot of the time yo can just check the tags for the location.

Nice photo! picture how boring this shot would be without the graffiti.

graf makes everything look better. this was shot through a teeny liitle spot through the gross pink walkway habitraily thing that has been built on the bridge. the buildings around the bridge are so beautiful. but it's changed so much... The Williamsburg bridge used toi be so great to run around on.
sigh.
