Timelapse #1 - Clouds on Mules Park (25.01.2008)

In order to view this Flickr video, you'll need to
install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player.
Just uploading a few of my timelapse videos to check out this new Flickr Video stuff. Unfortunately some of my better ones are over 90 seconds long. They run at 15fps, and I've tried to use TMPGEnc to re-encode them at 24fps to shorten them but it's not happening at all - I thought it'd be simple so if anyone knows a way to re-encode XviD at a faster speed, please let me know! (Of course, i've deleted the source images :-s)

This one was my first ever. Some clouds moving on top of Mules Park, Teignmouth. It was windy and my PClix lead fell out of the camera! Scratch ending!

WOW! In about a day this video has had over 1000 views, more than probably all of my photos put together! I don't understand why though - please check out this one: Timelapse #2 - Teignmouth Harbour Sunset... I think it's far superior! Thanks again guys

thanks for your comment HelgiR - as I've said this is really nowhere near my best timelapse work either, I just don't know if I'm going to be able to get my better ones on with the trouble I am having re-encoding. I also love timelapses, and I'm also concerned at what 'Flickrtube' could descend into it... but I've also got hope. Have a look at this comment by Hegl - an interesting read.

thanks for your comment Daniel. I do indeed use my D80... This site is all you need to know: www.pclix.com. Good luck, let me know if you need any help.

How do you make a movie once you got all your images? Silly question I know...

lenoz  Pro User  says:

no, ashenzil! it's only a silly question if you already know the answer! I had to find out for myself at one point! Here you go, this is the short version:

1. Use the intervalometer feature on your camera or buy a PClix, especially if you want more control.

2. Snap a whole bunch of photos, one photo every x seconds (x will be a very different value depending on what you are shooting)

3. Use QuickTime Pro to join the image sequence into an uncompressed .mov video file

4. Use an encoding program such as TMPGEnc to reduce dimensions, and encode it as an XviD or DivX .avi video in order to bring it down to suitable size and quality for uploading to Flickr.

Hope that helps!

steve, there's a massive difference between, on one hand, discussing in a forum/group the relative merits or shortcomings of Flickr allowing video, and on the other hand, leaving rude messages on individual members' individual videos. Until you understand that difference, I'd guess that Flickr would be a better place without you than it would be without this one video.

it's all about the light down on the sea. and the comment 'Good scene. Carry on'

my knee-jerk reaction to flickr video was that it was a completely shit idea, as you will just end up with loads of bad videos. i have to say i didn't consider stuff like this and it's pretty cool for sure.

i guess that if you look at all of the photos on flickr, it's fair to say that only the top 1% are actually really good, and much will be the same with video i'm sure, but video-haters will just jump on the bad stuff as a tool to rubbish the concept.

either way, good effort mate and good to see loads of views innit :)

cheers sir. yeah i'm totally going to "carry on" too... great times!

you're right with the video stuff... there's so much in the way of crap photos, i don't see why we won't be able to stop crap videos getting in our faces the same way we do with photos - a lot of purists fussing about nothing i think.

yeah shocking amount of views tho, very nice, but also demoralising to know it's only cos it's one of the first videos on there, and the same people probably won't even bother looking at the photos that i'm proud of :-( anyway, i hope you of all people bothered to look at the surely-superior harbour timelapse?

by the way, my mum lives in Teignmouth, and this the first time I've come across Teignmouth on Flickr, and I've taken a few into-the-sun photos in that very place, AND this was the first video I looked at on Flickr.

Weird, eh ? ;-)

thanks for that david! yeah it is odd! i've seen plenty of pics of teignmouth on flickr (i guess i've searched for them, and you've only ever stumbled upon them) and I'm always wondering "Hmm i wonder if i've seen that person about..." the whole mix between global/local and intimate/disconnected that Flickr brings about - it's mad... but yeah, glad you enjoyed the vid, I've got tons of other teignmouth based stuff if you want some more!
