Just some more lulz out of the whole fig debacle. Save Our Figs and the Newcastle Baptist Tabernacle are putting on a big funeral for the figs today (26/2/2012). Should be a hoot...

I wonder what Jesus would think....

The Fig Funeral

The Fig Funeral

Nice day for it... While it's incredibly tempting to simply say, "LOL" and leave it as is. I feel that would be way too negative to lop on Save Our Fig's plate at the moment.

Given that this stunt is clearly just a way for SOFs to try and stay relevant and in the news, it's really a symbiotic relationship where an ailing church demographic can get a bit of boost from the increased attention over the last few years.

So in the interests of turning this into a positive for SOFs after the humiliation they've received over the last few weeks, here's some more suggestions I have for this budding relationship of easily influenced flocks :

Fee Mosely can lobby Newcastle City Council to endorse the teachings of the bible in Newcastle schools. Who needs evolution when we can just use an organisation's own documents to preach to the masses? Bible Studies by megaphone has a ring to it.

John Sutton can move a motion to ask for an independent assessment into the theory that Earth is 4 billion years old. Afterall, there's a lot of people that simply don't think that's true... so there's got to be someone benefitting from that narrative....

Cr Osbourne can then ask for a working party to determine if the Earth truly is round... I'm sure the church would love a bit of dissemination of that debate... it's been a little downhill on that one since the Copernicus days.

In the meantime, enjoy your afternoon, guys! Naming it a 'Requim for Common Sense' would've been more appropriate.

This painting was TINY! Yet it was the only one in a room full of Cezanne's, Monet's, Rembrandt's and Picasso's that was protected by a glass cabinet.

Black Sea Nettle

Black Sea Nettle

The black sea nettle (Chrysaora achlyos), sometimes informally known as the "black jellyfish" due to its dark coloration, is a species of jellyfish that can be found in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its range is thought to be from Monterey Bay in the north, down to southern Baja California and Mexico, though there are reports of sightings as far north as British Columbia. It is a giant jellyfish, with its bell measuring up to 1 m (3 ft) in size, and its oral arms extending up to 6 m (20 ft) in length. Despite its size and occasional proximity to Pacific coastal cities, the Black sea nettle was only recognized and scientifically described as a separate species in 1997, though misidentified pictures of the jellyfish had been taken in 1925. It has the scientific distinction of being the largest invertebrate discovered in the twentieth century.

California Artist

California Artist

California Artist, USA, 1982, by Robert Arnesen.

One of Arneson's great obsessions, self-portraiture is the genre in which he achieved his most playful and inventive forms. California Artist was completed in 1982 in response to an attack by a New York art critic, who cited the "impoverished sensibility of the provincial cultural life of California" and depicted Arneson's work as the "mark of a mind that is too easily pleased with his own jokes."
