waterboarding

waterboarding by Legofesto.
LEGO recreation of the torture technique known as waterboarding, which has been used by the USA in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay and Bagram airbase, as well as in other "black sites" in the name of the War On Terror.

Images of waterboarding can be found here, here (in Vietnam) and here.

As we now know, the CIA destroyed thousands of images and videos of interrogations using torture, including those showing waterboarding.

I guess cutting non-combatants head's off with a rusty butcher knife is the more modern and acceptable activity to partake in.

Great work. I like it, well, I dislike the action itself, I like the presentation.

jaywellington. Agreed. But how do we stop one without the other? Can you provide an alternative solution that would yield us info regarding potential acts of terrorism?

@bema18 Torture does not produce good intelligence. The alternative solution is not torturing people and gathering good intelligence in other ways.

Indeed. Intelligence officials were against the torture memos, not only because it would put them in a lot of hot water, but also because it produces muddled information. Why? Because anyone being tortured will say ANYTHING to stop it.

@bema18

Review the case of Ahmed Ressam, the "Millennium Bomber", captured in 1999 on his way towards LAX to bomb it on New Year's Eve. He was not tortured; he was provided counsel & a trial; yet he provided useful information to interrogators regarding the 9/11 plot. Information which found its way into the August, 2001, President's Daily Briefing titled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike In US"...then subsequently ignored.

I'd suggest using that case as an example of how to procure information without resorting to torture.

@Legofesto
My apologies to you for using this Flickr thread as a sounding board for this stuff. Great concept & keep up the good work!

To be fair, Cynical At Last – Nick Berg wasn't being needlessly tortured for information (regardless of its actual usefulness). He was just being straight up, brutally murdered.

All of these Lego sets make a very powerful message. You'd think little yellow, toy dudes with C-hands would cutesy this stuff up, but it makes it more dire and dark.

Great work.

Your images are very powerful indeed. Even more so because it's portrayed with little yellow plastic men.

@TediousDestroyer I was going to disagree with you but your use of caps lock has convinced me. In fact I think we should cut their heads off too. I mean they do it so why shouldn't we? I am, thanks to your poignant commentary, in full support of the decapitation of suspected combatants. If America would just stoop as low as its enemies more often the world would be a better place.

CAPSLOCKA!!!! LZOZL I KANT SPEL RITE!

TediousDestroyer's, er, increasingly disturbed commentry has now been deleted after leaving 4 bizarre comments in 4 minutes where he was apparently having a chat with 2 of his personalities: the tedious one and the destroyed one. There may be more... He was feeding (maybe breeding) his *own* trolls ;)
