• I was just trying to shoot these two seagulls gliding over the river at sunset, and then all this other stuff happened in the background. ;^p
  • hahaha...yeah, right - 9dedos
  • 97% water vapor.
I'd prefer my account not be a political platform. There's plenty of other places to debate. Thx. :^)

burn

STS-117, June 08, 2007

Launch +7 seconds (approx). The shockwave came soon hereafter. Wow. There should be more camera shake in these shots than there is.
Atlantis was just about to start rolling, but here it's still in profile so you can see the main engine exhaust to the right of the boosters'. The tower bathed in flame gives some sense of scale. That's just a massive burn going down.

Seen from here.

    Gorgeous

Very Nice. Was this a general viewing area? I always thought that the pad was far enough away, to preclude any chance of a shot like this.
I like it. And I like the lens too!

i've got some similar shots to these over here... my launch flickr set

taken from the family / friends area at the banana creek viewing site.

@Jersey JJ: We were on base. I am very lucky to have been a sponsored guest for my first launch.

@Kenny Miller: LOL. No way. We were in the right side E bleachers on the 3rd row. Sorry we didn't meet up. I wonder what NASA would have thought of a flickr bus? Ha. Great pics. I'll get the rest of mine up soon and bundle a set together too. Do you recommend a Group here to post too? Nice photos! :^)

Beautiful Shot - How bad was the shockwave?

  8. unintelligiBill (72 months ago | reply)

    Excellent capture!!!

  9. lecates (72 months ago | reply)

@johnmac7227: Shockwave was not bad at all! ;^p
It was a big, loud, low frequency wall of sound that you could feel in your chest. Really got the adrenalin pumping.

This is great! You seem to have got the framing and everyhting exactly right, but how did you avoid all the shake?

Thanks to everyone for the gracious comments. It was a great event for me.

@mikegocrazy: I never answered your question. I avoided shake by keeping the shutter between 1/1250 and 1/4000 for almost all of the shots. Combination of ISO400, f/2.8, EV Comp -1, strong light from the sun behind us, and the brightness of that exhaust flame. I didn't have a tripod, nor steady hands. :^)
