Day 1/366.....Some Starbucks wisdom

Day 1/366.....Some Starbucks wisdom by Denise Cross.
Jan 1 001/366

Some Starbucks wisdom on the first day of my 366 project.

I struggled with this one, or the same picture in B&W, because the picture is about the sentiment on the cup and not the cup itself. What do you think?

This is a great group and a great project and I'm looking forward to learning a lot. I actually took 11 pictures with differing apertures because I'm trying to learn what works with the 50mm 1.8. I'm hoping to become a better photographer by having the camera in my hand on a daily basis.

Constuctive criticism is appreciated!

It's a great photo. I like it in colour, the blue is good, and the cup stands out. In B&W it might fade into the BG. The focus is good, and the DOF is great. composition is also good, having it to the side. I like it.

But I don't like starbucks. ;-)

I like this shot. I looked at the b&w also but I really like the blue. It seems to frame the saying, not take away from it. It's a lovely color of blue so that doesn't hurt.

I normally want everything in B&W but I think the blue looks great here - nice contrast that gets lost in the B&W. Love the sentiment too. :)

I think they're both great.

One question:
is it just me, or does some combination of the lighting, angle and DOF
make the right-hand side of the cup look sharper than the left?

mjs365 - I recently tried Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and I must say I prefer their coffee...but I'll still give SB some business in a pinch ;-)

YvonneKnitsKnots - Thanks for your comments. I recently changed my patio cover from a dark wood lattice to a bright white. The light that I get in my home now is wonderful!

GButterfly - Thanks so much for your comments.

amp'ed - I am HORRIBLE at B&W...something I will definitely be working on during this project!

essellarr - Thanks for your comments...as for your question, I went back to the original and I can't say that I see what you are seeing. My first guess was a combination of the DOF and the curvature of the cup, but then again, I don't have the most discerning eye ;-)

I prefer the coloured one too. You mentioned that the sentiment was the object, but the background isn't busy and the blue makes the picture more inviting to look at.

Nice shot! I guess I'm the contrarian though, I thought the B&W worked better. The expanse of blue pulls my eye off the cup, where with the B&W I was focused. From a composition point I can see the color being a plus, but if your goal was the writing on the cup, then B&W for me.

You're off to a great start with your 366 project. I started doing a picture a day last July and haven't missed one yet - a lot of late nights along the way (which is why I'm doing comments at 2am!).

Hi! I'm just checking out all your photos now and I love that you're just learning and experimenting with the 50mm just like I am!! And I absolutely love doing the picture a day (I started Jan 1, too), it adds that little extra challenge!

I like the color one on this, because as others said, the blue is such a nice color - first my eye is drawn to the blue and then to the Starbucks cup, but then it's nicer to read the cup with that gentle, pretty blue next to it. (I love coffee! I just took some pictures of my cup of coffee a few minutes ago!)

Rosendahl - Thanks for stopping by. I can see everyone's point about the b&w all blending in. I've got to learn better contrast. I'm HORRIBLE at b&w, but, hey, I tried! As for Project 366, I hope I can match your record! I only decided to do this on New Years Eve!

Rebecca - Thanks for all of your comments. I noticed you've been reviewing my set, and I really appreciate it! Hope to see you throughout the year!

COLOR! Definitely Color! The out of focus area (bokeh) is gorgeous! It frames the midtone cup perfectly for the viewers focus! Like the composition!
