Which route should the California High Speed Rail Authority choose for the future bullet train - Altamont Pass (yellow) or Pacheco Pass (blue)? The choice seems obvious, doesn't it?

I'd go by the yellow. Maybe have connecting express buses from the cities where there are some lights along the blue, but the best route seems to be the yellow to me. If you think the blue option is bad, this is that they want to do here in Montreal (they new pink line)

The point of high speed rail is connect major city centers, such as LA-SF. Following the lights is preferable for heavy rail, light rail, and commuter rail. Intercity rail, not so much, as long as the stations are where the lights are, and they are.

The people along the Altamont corridor don't want high speed rail anyway. By choosing Pacheco, you're saving yourself a lot more stress by eliminating NIMBY opposition.

In the end, Pacheco doesn't preclude that Altamont can't be improved in the future. I would support the bulk of the ~billion that would go to improving transit that connects to HSR to go to Altamont.
