I love this idea - well done. I stumbled on the last one though, but got it after a few seconds. So much quicker that reading - I could take it all in and underdstand the details of the recipe in under 30 seconds - would have taken ME about 2 mins to read the equivelent.

If I was not a cook then the image for folding in the yolk mix with the beaten whites would confuse I think. I would understand better if veiwed from the top - or maybe it the cockeyed way I do my folding.

Well done - keep at the good work

2 things I noticed:

* at step 5 there is no bowl over the head
- to check if the whites are whipped

* the 1/2 cup in step 2 for the milk looks weird with half vertical

Besides that, fine. I'd still manage to burn it though.

Bootlaod, it sounds like you know more about cooking than you let on - bowls over the head indeed : D

'... sounds like you know more about cooking than you let on ...

Don't you watch Jamie? Always putting freshly whipped Merengue over his head.

'... Beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks like snow (you should be able to put the bowl over your head and not get wet!). Slowly incorporate the mascarpone mixture. ...' [CH4, Come Dine with Me, Tiramasu]

It's simply a way to test if the whipping is ready. As for cooking, na I just burn & char :)

is that a pinch of salt or a fistful of salt? to a non-english speaker who doesn't know a "pinch" measurement, but instead works with "dashes" or "bits" it could be confusing.

i'd like to see a larger version, it looks really cool

Also, what kind of pancake is this? I've never heard of anything like this!

kylemcinnes12321: Apart from photographing a plain flour package how do you suggest I communicate the ingredient? I'm interested in all ideas!

citronixtech: thanks for the advice the "pinch of salt" is defenitely an area I need to clarify

zachninme: It's a recipe entitled "American style pancakes" - it seems like a standard pancake recipe to me?!

First, Kivitel CALM DOWN... her iconography is discernably different than yours - folks like you always think everyone on earth has seen your stuff and mst STEAL it. LOL - get some humility.

So, some questions:
- in step 5, I'm not sure I'd get the 'folding'... what about adding a mixer/beater with a NO circle over it?
- in step 6, why is the mixture two-toned with brown?

Oh, and you made it on digg:

The clock is confusing for me. At first, I thought it was meant to show "heat for 12 seconds", which seemed pretty short to me. It wasn't until I saw your chocolate cake recipe that I realized how you were indicating elapsed time (i.e. 2-1/2 minutes).

The number "12" then, in your icon, is redundant. More helpful would be to replace it with "2.5m", IMHO.

Kivitel, I have no idea what you are talking about? seriously? I have never ever seen your work?

Take a breath and check next time before you start making accusations.

and if you read the description you will see that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS.

Ruxton  Pro User  says:

a few comments.. to start with excellent illustration nice and simple.

- perhaps to show flour without words, you show the process made to create it above, kinda of like a ... wheat + mill = flour bag

- the pinch illustration needs to be more obvious as to what it is, also convey salt as a salt shaker, S on the front, i wasnt really sure what it was at first.

- somebody already suggested milk carton, no words and then a cow near it.. or perhaps you can write a legend up top. So you'd have Cow and guy milking it = milk carton and then the other one above.. you could even stick eggs up there too (could be interesting.. chook, arrow coming out its backside to egg?)

also the no beater idea as mentioned above on the folding is a very good idea i think.

Anyway.. good luck with your project keep us all posted on it

I'm an American and I've always made pancakes from scratch and I've never beaten egg whites. That's always done for waffles. If you change the recipe a bit (not sure if you want to bother) then you might be able to clarify some of the more complicated steps. It's really neat.

One suggestion (like Bootload said); the liquid measurement for a half a cup looks odd with the vertical representation. It would make more sense for it to mimic how it looks in reality. Also, if you've never made pancakes before, how would you know how much to pour in step 6? Maybe you'd pour the entire bowl into the pan at once?

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. Again, very cool.

Ahhh! I majored in Visual Communication Design at Ohio State and proposed doing a visual recipe book for my senior thesis project as well! But I ended up doing something else (Influences on Urban Patterns - www.jewskistreet.com/design/ ). And it never got digged or anything so cool. Boohoo. ;-) But good work and good luck!!

Good but there is no step to remove the cooked pancake from the pan. You would get a thicker and thicker pancake for each iteration of the cooking steps.

i would make a book of those recipes. they rule.

in germany, a big dictionary company, "Langenscheidt", made a dictionary called "without-words-book" (given that dictionary is "Words book", literally).

I didn't find the 1/2 cup of milk confusing at all, although I think a horizontal orientation would communicate the same thing. I thought the teaspoon was a great touch. The only question I had at the end was "how much heat on the burner?"
Posted 39 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

macro girl says:

du_dragons : if you check v.2 you will see the burner now shows 3 options for heat - low medium and high!
