The western view of the Bear Paws Mountains just outside of Havre, Montana.
The mountains down the road from Havre were cloudless for the first time since my arriving in Montana many months ago. I didn't know if I should celebrate this event by venturing closer to the mountains or move further away. I instead opted for somewhere in between.
Coming from a relatively flat state like Wisconsin, the mountains here in Montana amaze me. It is hard comprehend the violent forces under the Earth's mantle that were necessary to create such rugged peaks. The mountains near Havre are not as tall the Rockies, but they are impressive for other reasons. Surrounded by miles of flat, featureless land, they rise up out of nowhere in a most peculiar way. Which begs the question: "Why here?"
