Bit cold for my liking, but gorgeous shot and
a nice change from the reef shots that abound
on this site. You deserve a medal for braving the waters
and this pic is a great reward!
The kelp base is usually attached to rocks
that are anywhere from 10 to 50 feet deep in
the pacific northwest. This particular photo
was taken at depth of approx. 25-30 feet (10
meters). This dive site is where the
underwater Monterey canyon meets land and
just beyond the kelp beds, it gets deep
quickly and one can reach depths of a couple
hundred feet within 300 yards of shore. The
canyon itself extends about a 100 miles into
the Pacific and has depths exceeding 10k
feet.
An unseen place, hidden from above by a raft
of leaves and bulbs. Two shafts of light make
it through, but a school of this world's
residents converge and quickly gobble it up.
Such magnificent height and depth you've
captured; these pillars are given the canvas
of a full frame, yet their massive nature
still sinks to depths below our view. We are
sea lions, gazing out the bay windows of a
boundless home. And no microphone'd diver
answering the questions of day-trip kids to
detract from just swaying with the gentle tug
of the water's ebb and flow. You've shared a
grand aquatic forest, an idyllic
pasture...thank you for letting us sit and
watch. I am an Admin for *ABW* Gallery - one of the best kept secrets on Flickr,
and we would be honored to display "Kelp
Forest" with our collection of

Cathedrals are built over hundreds of years
to create this very effect. Among other
things water represents the great
Unconscious, and fish symbolize insights swimming throughout that
unfathomable realm. On top of that, kelp
represents longevity according to another
source. So what you found here is better than
any cathedral. It's a timeless temple with a
halo on top.

I'm a recent transplant to California, but
not a stranger to diving in the Pacific. I've
dived Vancouver Island, Catalina and the
Channel Islands. This is a beautiful shot!
I'm now considering throwing my gear in the
car this weekend and heading over to Carmel
or Monterey! Anyone going diving there this
weekend?
>>>Anyone going diving there this
weekend? <<< BC:
Welcome and thx for the compliments.
Unforutnately, our summer is probably the
worst time of year to go diving in
Montery/Carmel due to the frequent plankton
blooms not that it stops me but I certainly
dive less frequently now as opposed to
winter. I'll post a couple of helpful links
below to help determine conditions. I follow
Tribolet's advice which is that you're
probably forcing it if the swell from the NW
(most common) exceeds 9 feet or out of the
west at 10 feet. Looking at the 3 day swell
chart (which changes frequently), this
weekend looks like an easy pass on diving.
