Specious Glitter 2

Looking up the word 'mulamma' in the Hindi dictionary recently, I saw that one definition was 'specious glitter'. I was intrigued by the notion. Of course what was really meant was gold plating, the kind that is applied to cheap jewelry. I posted the definition to Instagram, and one friend pointed me towards a poem by the Hindi poet Agyeya, "Kalagi Bajare ki", which bore the following lines:

Kabhi baasan adhik ghisne se mulamma chuut jata hai"

(sometimes when a pot becomes worn, the shine wears off)

I thought this profound, although another friend intervened, and pointed out that usually mulamma is applied to jewelry, not pots and pans. He remarked that perhaps Agyeya was in the habit of using it for his pots.

These two paintings are calligraphed versions of that line of poetry.

Acrylic on canvas panel, 6" x 12".
