Victorian cyclist, circa 1890.

Victorian cyclist, circa 1890. by canong2fan.
A print from a glass negative from about 1890. We only recently started to print these amazing Victorian photographs and have been researching their origin. See more at www.cartes.fsnet.co.uk/terry/terry.htm

There are features on the bike which help to date it - solid tyres, radial spokes, only a front brake which presses onto the tyre and the frame with a single bar. The lad seems dressed for serious cycling and the cap may indicate membership of a club.

He looks like an adult to me, particularly in the eyes and receding hairline.

Hi A.Davey.
I agree he is more like a young man than a boy, I have changed the title!
Perhaps I could just fall back on the "well at my age - every one looks like a boy" routine!
In fact for the first few years we owned these glass negatives we could only hold them up to the light to peer at them and this one became known as 'the boy with a bike". When I got a scanner which would cope with film & negs we found what treasure we had in this box we bought from a church fête.
We reckon this chap is probably a cycling enthusiast in those clothes - today he would be in skin tight lycra with a bike weighing next to nothing!

I do; if I had more money I'd be raiding the antique stores every weekend! I'll definitely keep collecting. :)
I think it looks a bit like a Schwinn I used to have. :D

this was added to Europe B&W.

tag your photos with specific facts about where the photo was shot.

- country
- city

- actual area/street/place
- etc

the more details about the location, the better!
