The walk home.
Outside the urban centers of the Philippines, this afternoon scene is the norm. Boys and girls take long habal habal (motorcycle) rides, jump on pumpboats to nearby islands or even walk for hours thru rough terrain to go to and from school. To many of their parents, there is still value in education. To these kids, school is worth the little inconvenience.

Much like this schoolboy walking on the pier, I am so looking forward to winding this day down. I know tomorrow is never promised, but I am always hopeful. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Christmas came early...
I've been lusting over this since it was announced back in August. Of course, Popoy --- my Nikon d90 (yes, I name my stuff.) is not being replaced. I just wanted a decent P&S i can take everywhere without it breaking my back. Luckily, the boyfriend scored me the last unit from the first batch of deliveries here in the Philippines. Very cool.
I originally thought of going with the G11. My friend has a G10 and it seems like it's a very able camera. However, reviews from the S90 are very convincing and made me sway this way. For me, the compact size, the image quality from the sample shots and mehn, that control ring (ok, it's a novelty thing, but i love it.) sealed the deal.
I've just been toying with it for a night, so I am going to give a rundown of my "first impression": Yes, it lives up to being a compact cam. It is that small. You can customize the function of the wheel at the back and the control ring which can be very convenient. The wheel and the function buttons of the wheel can be a lil flimsy, like it's going to fall off anytime. The four other buttons on the back feels much more "attached" to the cam, so do the ones on top.
For HDR nuts like me, yes people, it auto brackets. However, i still love the feel of a heavy cam when i take my 3 exposures ---- the weight can stabilize the shots and the higher fps helps. I think, i'll be needing a tripod or a steadier hand for this. I probably won't be getting my shots for HDR from this, it will come from the d90 still.
I've seen the colors of my initial shot in the computer. It looks great on the LCD, but coming from a nikon cam, I know I'll have to get used to the canon colors. One of the first shots I took from this cam, I PS-ed it a lot to make it look like a Nikon shot. Hah! So maybe i should stop doing that. LOL.
So I'm hoping I could get more into street photography with this baby --- which is one of the reasons why i really wanted this cam. Definitely looking forward to "shooting from the hip".

Walking on Stilts
The boardwalk going to the tower has seen better times. Huge portions of the wooden handrails are missing, and probably have fallen onto the waters and now floating somewhere in the Pacific. There are gaps in the steps --- one wrong step and you're in the surf. Crossing from one end to another may require a little focus to the occasional wary tourist, but to the waveriders who have traveled halfway around the world to experience Cloud 9, the short trek is a few more minutes away --- or towards --- to living out the dream.

in between bamboos
We spent two days island hopping around Siargao in search of a perfect sunset spot, only to find it right at our resort's backyard. The strong Pacific breeze was blowing while we were treated to this sweet light show. It was one of those afternoons that makes you forget everything and just lets you bask in the simplest of moment.
Shooting sunsets is not really my style, but you can't ignore that glaring beauty.
