Muslim outrage huh. OK ... let's do a little historical review. Just some lowlights:
•Muslims fly commercial airliners into buildings in New York City. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslim officials block the exit where school girls are trying to escape a burning building because their faces were exposed. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims cut off the heads of three teenaged girls on their way to school in Indonesia. A Christian school. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims murder teachers trying to teach Muslim children in Iraq. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims murder over 80 tourists with car bombs outside cafes and hotels in Egypt. No Muslim outrage.
•A Muslim attacks a missionary children's school in India. Kills six. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims slaughter hundreds of children and teachers in Beslan, Russia. Muslims shoot children in the back. No Muslim outrage.
•Let's go way back. Muslims kidnap and kill athletes at the Munich Summer Olympics. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims fire rocket-propelled grenades into schools full of children in Israel. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims murder more than 50 commuters in attacks on London subways and busses. Over 700 are injured. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims massacre dozens of innocents at a Passover Seder. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims murder innocent vacationers in Bali. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslim newspapers publish anti-Semitic cartoons. No Muslim outrage
•Muslims are involved, on one side or the other, in almost every one of the 125+ shooting wars around the world. No Muslim outrage.
•Muslims beat the charred bodies of Western civilians with their shoes, then hang them from a bridge. No Muslim outrage.
•Newspapers in Denmark and Norway publish cartoons depicting Mohammed. Muslims are outraged.
Dead children. Dead tourists. Dead teachers. Dead doctors and nurses. Death, destruction and mayhem around the world at the hands of Muslims .. no Muslim outrage ... but publish a cartoon depicting Mohammed with a bomb in his turban and all hell breaks loose.
Come on, is this really about cartoons? They're rampaging and burning flags. They're looking for Europeans to kidnap. They're threatening innkeepers and generally raising holy Muslim hell not because of any outrage over a cartoon. They're outraged because it is part of the Islamic jihadist culture to be outraged. You don't really need a reason. You just need an excuse. Wandering around, destroying property, murdering children, firing guns into the air and feigning outrage over the slightest perceived insult is to a jihadist what tailgating is to a Steeler's fan.
I know and understand that these bloodthirsty murderers do not represent the majority of the world's Muslims. When, though, do they become outraged? When do they take to the streets to express their outrage at the radicals who are making their religion the object of worldwide hatred and ridicule?

Not every MUSLIM is a Extremist or Fundamentalist! There are good and bad people in every color, religion, culture, and country. But for some unknown reason, Muslims in the media are portrayed to be the only bad and nasty people on this world.
Hitler was a Christian and I think everyone know what he did. I don't understand that no one called him a Christian Extremist then why do people use these words so regularly for Muslims? "Muslim Extremist, Mulsim Terrorist, Muslim Fanatics...etc??!!" I get very frustrated when some people in the name of Islam perform these acts as Islam is in favor of violence! Why is that...have people no tolerance to read books about Islam and learn what kind of religion it ACTUALLY is?
Islam is a religion of peace and people for their lack of tolerance and knowledge do not understand the true meaning of Islam especially in the case of "Jihad." Jihad means "Struggle". Struggle for peace, struggle for respect, struggle for your rights, struggle for your life, struggle for speaking the truth...!!! But unfortunately for some extremist who want Islam to look bad in the eyes of non-Muslims have started this propoganda to show that Muslims want to kill, slaughter, murder, and torture people. Were those MUSLIMS that tortured those Muslim prisners in Iraq?? Made them take their clothes off, put electric wires on them, torture them with dogs and etc. and taken horrible photographs while in those shameful positions. I don't think i need to say more.
If Muslims are doing wrong things then other people of different religions are not doing anything different. I am not going to start writing a book on how horrible things OTHER people have done but i will only say before writing those reports on Muslim outrage....read a little about Islam, Jihad and to why there would be so many people against this religion.

Are theu the only one who think that their life is superior and countries better? No us or uk citizen lives in other countries? Dont us and uk citizens do violance in their own countries and other countries? Don't Muslims pay their taxes, bills, work, or study and perform every other role as citizens of that country. Some Muslims vote, some are even the representatives of great coorperations, organizations and companies, they are friends with the uk and us citizens and condemn violence. Why do people or the media show these good things about hte MUSLIMS why do they show only negative things about them. Why do people go to different countries. Do all Americans live in USA, do All Londoners live in London. And to comment on why the hell Muslims are so outraged on such a cartoon is that in each religion there are holy people, respectable people, messengers, Gods, that are very important to people of such religions.....when you disrespect, and make cartoons of them in unrespectable situations Then it IS GOING TO OUTRAGE THEM no matter of what religion they belong to. Don''t expect people of that religion to not do anything and just sit at home and enjoy cartoonist disrespecting the holy prophet of Islam. The cartoon has portrayed the prophet to be the reason of violance and portrying him of other non-tolerable personality. In Islam making sketches is prohibited and to why is that?........Well people disrespect other people's religion, portray wrongness, Nudity (disrespect to women) and etc. The Muslims don't know what Prophet looks like since their are no pic. of him but they respect him very much and know a lot about his lifestyle and his personality; he is the symbol of peace. So for people to make a cartoon of him looking so angry and having a bomb in his turban and looking so un peaceful and evil is an ABSOLUTE DISRESPECT which is not going to make people happy.
So that's why people should respect other people's religion, culture and opinions so people will not be outraged when they are being disrespected. Please also read about the religions, gain knowledge about a certain thing before you actuallyu believe in it. Not everything yuo see or hear is true. There are extremes in a lot of faiths, but the extremists in these photographs are I suppose the most scary, hiding behind their masks & beards.
When I saw the 'offensive' Danish cartoons I wondered what the furore was about, I found them quite tame, but then I'm not an easily offended jealot that goes off the head at the slightest insult.I believe it says somewhere " we are a tolerant people/faith, but we can't bear insult", that to be seems hypocritical in the extreme, how can you be both at the same time??????. Well maybe us free thinking,tolerant,law abiding Scots/Brits/Europeans don't like being treated with contempt in our countries. We at least try to stay within the law & put up with a lot. We don't hit the streets burning fictional books, & waving placards threatening to behead folk that hold different points of view from us.
With regards who tortured Iraqi's in prison yes the Americans have been guilty of that crime, & hopefully they'll be called to account, but don't forget how many how many Iraqi's Sadamn Hussein slaughtered during his reign of terror in Iraq.In addition muslims are killing in their thousand fellow muslims just now in Iraq.

Even if the Israel-Palestine conflict was to be resolved, they would continue to hate and kill - the USA, western Europe and eventually each other, over which particular version of Islam is the true version and should therefore dominate.

I dislike most religions because few actually serve to promote peace and harmony in any practical way. They are all about self-promotion and spreading the word in order to bolster the power of those few individuals who will benefit most.

There exists a cultural vagueness in the West. This vagueness results from the presence of two different concepts. The first is a great Western concept that we respect, appraise, and need. That concept is freedom of speech. This is a great humane and civilized concept. On the other hand, there is the great Islamic concept of dignifying Allah’s Messenger (SAWS). The problem arises due to the lack of understanding of the Islamic Civilization and the Western Civilization regarding these two concepts. The non-Muslims cannot value the rank of dignifying the Prophet (SAWS). On the other hand, due to the below-average quality of practical application of freedom of speech, Muslims have a vague understanding of the concept of respecting freedom of speech.
Accordingly, what is required now? We do not want to refuse the concept of freedom of speech, absolutely not. However, the West should alter the freedom of speech so that it does not collide with the very important Islamic value of dignifying the Prophet (SAWS). Here lies the vagueness and ambiguity. The West understands very well the freedom of speech (which we appreciate) but it does not understand Islamic values, such as dignifying the Prophet (SAWS) and other Islamic sanctities. This is where the Western cultural vagueness lies.
I clearly say to the West, you have a problem. You cannot comprehend how much the Muslims love Prophet Muhammad (SAWS). You are still unable to understand this point. If you had really encompassed its significance, you would never have accepted what happened. The West, in general, governments and people, does not apprehend that Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us than our parents, dearer to me than my father and dearer than my mother. I am sure that any Muslim woman listening to me now, be her religious or not, will swear on that fact. Just ask, what does Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) mean to you? It is not even necessary to do that because it is so evident, but you may conduct surveys for yourselves, and you will realize how true what I am saying is. Ask any youth, be he heedless or pious; ask any Muslim anywhere, in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Yemen or in Egypt. Ask any Muslim in any village regardless of how religious he is, be he an obedient Muslim or not, a drug user or not, successful in his life or a failure, old or young, ask them, what does Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) mean to you?
O West, I affirm that Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to all Muslims than their own parents. O West, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us, Muslims, than our children and grandchildren. O West, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to us than our money, dearer to us than our own selves. He is dearer to us than our own countries. O Egyptian, who is dearer to you, Egypt or Allah’s Prophet? O Saudi, who is dearer to you, Saudi Arabia or Allah’s Prophet? O Yemeni, O Moroccan, O Algerian, who is dearer to you, your country or Allah’s Messenger (SAWS)? O West, comprehend that meaning, Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) is dearer to Muslims than their children and their own selves.
We can never forget the hadith that I repeatedly mentioned during the episodes of “On the Path of the Beloved”. O West, listen to this hadith[11] as it forms part of the sentimental make-up of the Islamic personality:
“We were with the Prophet and he was holding the hand of Omar Ibnul-Khattab. Omar said to him, ‘O Allah's Messenger! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.’ The Prophet said, ‘No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.’ Then Omar said to him, ‘However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.’ The Prophet said, ‘Now, O Omar, (now you are a believer).’”[12]
Being a true believer is conditioned with loving Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) more than our own selves.
O West, this is our notion and this is our love for Prophet Muhammad (SAWS).
I know that the West resists racism as they realize very well what it means. I also know that they stand up against any anti-Semitic assaults as they recognize the serious consequences of such acts. Yet, true contradiction lies in respecting Semitism and resisting racialism on the one hand, while humiliating the most valued figure for Muslims, the Prophet (SAWS), on the other.
Six months ago, a famous journalist of the BBC attacked Arabs describing them as a worthless nation. In spite of being a renowned figure with a daily program in Britain, his slandering was rejected by the British as racist and he was fired from the BBC. At that time, I was preparing a program on family matters, and knowing that he had articles and shows tackling this subject, I wanted to refer to them. To my surprise, none of his works were available due to his intolerant views against Arabs. There is no way to compare the Prophet (SAWS) to the Arabic nation, as slandering them is of a diminutive nature when compared to offending the Prophet (SAWS). My message to the West then is that freedom of speech, which we indeed respect, honor, and actually need, should be modified so that it does not clash with the highly revered Muslim value of dignifying the Prophet (SAWS). The West respects monarchies, Semitism, all races, and different ethnicities, and its respect to the Prophet (SAWS) and to sacred Muslim values should be no less.
Thus, my message to the Muslim ummah is that we should not forsake dignifying the Prophet (SAWS) under any circumstance. On the other hand, my message to the West is that the value of freedom of speech should be adapted to Muslim values.
My third message is to the whole world. This offense does not aim at the Prophet (SAWS) alone, but rather to one billion, two hundred thousand Muslims; or rather to all humanity. To explain this further to everyone, whether Muslim or not, I believe that Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) is the greatest personality that existed on earth. There is no doubt that his model of reform was most successful so far and whoever denies this fact is indeed most ungrateful. Slandering him is actually slandering humanity. Great men that existed throughout history were qualified as such due to a certain trait in their characters. Gandhi for example, was a great politician, Shakespeare a great dramatist, Voltaire a great writer, Napoleon a great military leader and so on. They were all great in one aspect or the other, while the Prophet (SAWS) was great in every aspect of his life. He was so great morally that he never hit or humiliated a soul, never beat a woman, never betrayed or lied, never went back on his word or avenged himself. He was always called 'the truthful and honest one' before bearing the message of Islam, and after becoming a prophet, the values and principles of the Qur’an were the model for his behavior. He was also great in his political insight. After the Battle of the Trench, for example, he knew that it was a turning point that would not be followed by a defeat. Moreover, he was great in his submissiveness to Allah as he bowed when praying, saying,
“O Allah, it is for Thee that I bowed. I affirm my faith in Thee and I submit to Thee, and submit humbly before Thee my hearing, my eyesight, my marrow, my bone, my sinew.”[13]
He (SAWS) also used to stand (in prayer) until both his feet swelled. When asked why (he offered such an unbearable prayer) he said,
“Should I not be a thankful slave?” [14]
He was great in the way he believed in freedom of opinion. In the Battle of Badr, he changed the location of the battlefield upon the advice of a soldier. He also agreed to dig the trench around Madinah according to Salman al-Faresy’s suggestion, and changed the fighting plan of the Battle of Uhud to respect the opinion of some of his companions. This is how he respected freedom of speech 1400 years ago!
He was great at forgiving others. On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, his companions were rejoicing saying, “Today is the day of a great battle and today Quraysh will be humiliated by Allah”. Conversely, the prophet's (SAWS) response was that today is the day of mercy in which Allah will bestow honor on Quraysh.
He was great in his voluntary renunciation of worldly luxuries when he could have been the richest man on earth had he wished to be. He was also great in the way he dealt with young people motivating them to exercise. For example, he once passed by some of the young companions of the tribe of Aslam practicing archery and he said to them,
“O offspring of Ishmael! Practice archery as your father was a great archer. I am with (on the side of) the son of so-and-so-.” Hearing that, one of the two teams stopped throwing. The Prophet (SAWS) asked them, “Why are you not throwing?” They replied, “O Allah's Apostle! How shall we throw when you are with the opposite team?” He said, “Throw, for I am with you all.”[15]
His enemies were never able to slander him due to any bad trait. He lived with them for 40 years before the divine message and another 13 years after it, and never were they able to smear him with a single bad trait that marred his character, or doubt his outstanding abilities. They even testified that he had never lied in his life. That is how great he was and that is how humiliating him smears every American, Indian, Pakistani etc.; everyone, whether Muslim or not. It is an insult to all humankind when such a great man is insulted.
He was great in his mercy. When he was persecuted by the people of At-Ta’ef and stoned until his feet kept bleeding, the angel of the mountains asked for his permission to destroy them. Yet his response was to supplicate Allah to guide them and to save them. Furthermore, in the Battle of Uhud, he was injured, overcome by his enemies, had his front teeth broken, and fell into a pit with blood gushing from his wounds. Nevertheless, when his companions asked him to curse them and to invoke Allah to punish them, he declined stressing the fact that he was sent as a mercy to all of humankind. He even invoked Allah to guide them to the right path and to excuse them for their ignorance.
He was merciful even with animals narrating that,
“A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him enter Paradise.”[16]
Similarly, he (SAWS) said,
“A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger.”[17]
This is our Prophet and this is how great he was. Unlike that of other great human figures in history, the Prophet’s greatness is lasting throughout the generations.
He believed in co-existence. He trusted the Jews and gave them all the rights of citizenship in Madinah, guaranteeing that no one would harm them, take any of their money, force them to convert, or intercede with their freedom to worship. He was also great in co-existence when he was against using the Muslims loyal to him in Makkah to create tension among the people of Quraysh, even during the war between Makkah and Madinah. At the time of the Hudaybeya treaty, he could have waged war against Quraysh but resorted to peace instead. He could have turned it into a bloodbath, but he chose peace and forced it on his enemies.
The human race should be proud that Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) existed one day, whether they were Muslims, Hindu, Jews, Christians, believers of any kind, or even non-believers. He is a turning point in the course of humanity. This is Muhammad (SAWS) and this is how humanity was humiliated the day he was. People around the world are demanding an international law that protects the dignity of this great Prophet.
That was my message to Muslims, to the West, and to the whole world.
One final question remains here, which is, what is it that we want? We do not need speeches. It took me some time to deliver this speech, as I believe that speeches alone cannot solve this problem. We do not even want superficial apologies that are not as deep as our wounds. We do need effective actions that denote Western respect for the Prophet (SAWS). We will not stop our protests until our Prophet regains the dignity he duly deserves as our great leader. Thus empty words and shallow apologies are not enough, actions must be taken. Until then, I need everyone to convey this message to their families and friends. I want it to be translated by Dar al-Tarjama to all languages and to be distributed everywhere to reach the West. This speech will be broadcast on Iqraa’ channel soon and I want as many people as possible to watch it. Meanwhile we should do our best to let the people know about our Prophet (SAWS). ‘On the Path of the Beloved’ for example, a program about the Prophet’s life, is being replayed now on Iqraa’ every Tuesday and Friday. Dr Tarek Suweidan, A’aed al-Qarny, Al-Habib Aly al-Jifry and Dr. Al-Buty are all renowned modern Muslims scholars who have speeches and articles about the life of the Prophet. Please do your best to make good use of their works as well as the tapes of ‘On the Path of the Beloved’ to enlighten the whole world about the Prophet (SAWS), until this predicament is unraveled and until Muslim requests are answered with real actions. Thus, what I am asking everyone to do is to distribute this message everywhere and to let everyone know about who the Prophet (SAWS) is. Our duty is double fold, we need to distribute this speech and make it available everywhere, and we need to introduce the Prophet (SAWS) and tell his story to everyone, among Muslims and non-Muslims. This speech is to be continued and I am indeed not done yet with this issue. Thank you. May peace and Allah’s blessing and mercy be upon you all, and let us get to work.

What Does Islam Say about Terrorism?
Islam, a religion of mercy, does not permit terrorism. In the Quran, God has said:
"God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers" (Quran, 60:8)
The Prophet Muhammad used to prohibit soldiers from killing women and children,1 and he would advise them: {...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.}2 And he also said: {Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.}3
Also, the Prophet Muhammad has forbidden punishment with fire.4
He once listed murder as the second of the major sins,5 and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.6}7
Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals and are forbidden to hurt them. Once the Prophet Muhammad said: {A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. On account of this, she was doomed to Hell. While she imprisoned it, she did not give the cat food or drink, nor did she free it to eat the insects of the earth.}8
He also said that a man gave a very thirsty dog a drink, so God forgave his sins for this action. The Prophet was asked, “Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?” He said: {There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.}9
Additionally, while taking the life of an animal for food, Muslims are commanded to do so in a manner that causes the least amount of fright and suffering possible. The Prophet Muhammad said: {When you slaughter an animal, do so in the best way. One should sharpen his knife to reduce the suffering of the animal.}10
In light of these and other Islamic texts, the act of inciting terror in the hearts of defenseless civilians, the wholesale destruction of buildings and properties, the bombing and maiming of innocent men, women, and children are all forbidden and detestable acts according to Islam and the Muslims. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the vast majority have nothing to do with the violent events some have associated with Muslims. If an individual Muslim were to commit an act of terrorism, this person would be guilty of violating the laws of Islam.

The long comment on the tension between love and respect for Islam versus love and respect for free speech is at the heart of this passionate debate.
For me the latter wins over the former though I respect the well known view that despite free speech it is not acceptable to yell "fire" in a crowded cinema.
Much as I detest the behaviour in the picture, I think a good chortle is the best antidote. George Orwell said somewhere that the English would never do the goose step because people would laugh too much. But he had no illusions about the horrors of dictatorship "Imagine a jackboot smashed repeatedly into a face".
If these people - those in the photo - were ever to be in government no amount of laughter would help. Sharia law makes no distinction between religion and state and if you want to live in a land where Bishops (or Imams) are in charge then go back to the 10th-14th Century AD (Modern Era is the current term) in Europe.
I sympathise with those of Islamic faith who say that what we see in this photo is not Islamic, but just as Christians should acknowledge the hideous cruelties done in the name of their faith, so Muslims have to accept - as very many do (they too are victims of fanaticism) - that their religion (one that once long long ago bought high culture and strict but tolerant government to East-West Christian factions) has been hi-jacked by people with a most aggressive interpretation of their sacred texts - claiming it allows them to stone people, behead them, amputate their limbs, clothe women from head to toe in darkness, destroy beautiful and sacred monuments and texts, and crush free speech - humourless and cruel.
The same has applied many times to Christianity - worst in its treatment of Jews, forced only to practice usury and then murdered in milllions for it, often with the help of hideously distorted interpretations of the New Testament (Christ recrucified over and over). Christian aggression applies where powerful men use words like 'crusade' and pray to their god for advice on foreign policy, dropping bombs from 30000 feet. The butcher's bill between East and West since 9/11 stands well above parity in 2008. I understand the rage that claims a 'terrorist' is a bomber without a plane. This is an age of asymmetric war - so I'm just as likely to be blown to smithereens while sipping my coffee in a Western city centre as some Muslim family is to be blown to smithereens at a wedding celebration because a hi-tech drone has returned an image that has caused someone thousands of miles away to suspect they're terrorists.
The West has earned much hatred through propping up dictatorships in Middle Eastern countries to ensure its fix of fossil fuel (I'm a cyclist but still my carbon footprint's too large). The ugly fools in this photo are our creation - our monsters - as surely as the rats that invaded our sewers with our industrial revolution. We rightly deplore their message, but isn't some of the animosity directed against these misbegotten folk a result of looking in a mirror?
I respect the ethics of the New Testament (Islam has its equivalent but these men would have burned it if they came across it). I do not believe in heaven or hell (outside this world) and have no hope for resurrection - though the Passion is the most moving parable of courage and dignity in the face of man's cruelty to man. A Christian zealot will mutter "The fool has said in his heart there is no God!" They've always got a bloody phrase...

I just read many of the above comments with great interest. I am a christian living in India which has a very substantial Muslim population. What i find absurdly amusing is that so called liberals in the West/apologists dont understand the true nature of Islam. You need to live in an area where they are in a majority to understand what they really are. It is a violent and nasty religion/philosophy which i personally feel will one day result in a titanic "clash of civilizations"
They will never progress or change. that time has passed. Comparing it to christian reformation is silly to say the least. their ultimate aim is the destruction of all other religions/peoples. Convert or die is their mantra. This is not some new age problem. Look at history. Islam has mostly spread through extreme violence.It arrived on the backs of Invaders. Turkey was solidly christian before Islam arrived and wiped it out.Iran, Central asia........the list goes on. Iran is a curious case. It was populated by Zorastrians before Islam arrived and wiped it out. To save their religion and their lives many fled to India where today they are simply an awesome people including stalwarts in Business/Finance/Law etc. They reshaped this country. Had not Islam arrived in Iran it would have probably been a Germany of Asia. Whereever Islam has gone only death and destruction has followed.

It's an inability to see the world in all its buzzing blooming confusion that characterises the dangerous idiots in this picture.
Surveying the well documented record of murderous destruction wrought by Europeans and Russians on one another during the 20th century, not to mention the near genocide committed against the indigenous inhabitants of Australia, New Zealand and America in the 19th century, it is astonishing (no it's not, it's all too typical of human frailty, especially among the so called 'faithful') that anyone who believes - or should believe - in examining the mote in their own eye, can exhibit such blindness about their own past.
Except for the 1920s genocide in Anatolia which too many of today's Turks try so strenuously to deny, I do not recall Islam, for which I am not making a case, let alone an apology, figuring significantly in any of the blood-drenched European events of the 1930s and 40s - creating Treblinka, Auschwitz, Belsen, Theirendstadt, and many more gassing camps, nor across Russia and its satellites the Gulag Archipelago with its mass starvation and killing of whole populations who didn't fit great economic plans.
I am aware that there was once an Ottoman Empire and a Mughal Empire which, like all human empires, rose and declined - every empire has its Aurangzeb - but which stand, in terms of art, science, philosophy, medicine and architecture, beside the Egyptian, Chinese, Greek and Roman ones.
The comments spurred by this contemporary image of dangerous ugly fools - one that reminds me of the even more frightening image of bright eyed enthusiasts worked into fanatical adoration at Nuremberg by a little man with a toothbrush moustache - contain too many uses of the word 'them' and 'their'.
I agree that the language of the last two comments in this thread is not hateful like the slogans in the photo, but it contains the seeds of those impulses that deny Christ's message, reminding me of a friend who claimed to dislike Americans. After I'd known him a few years I asked him about this odd opinion. He replied memorably "Oh yes I can't stand them. I met one once." The 2004 film 'Crash' brilliantly explored this dynamic, surprising the audience, when, for instance a bullying racist white cop puts his life at risk rescuing a black women from a car. Every time you generalise about a 'them' you make it less likely that you will be open to meeting an individual who doesn't fit the pattern of your fixed views about the group to which your prejudice insists he belongs. The Naz when asked what he meant by a 'neighbour' told a parable about this "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho..." -
If you - like me - oppose the impulses and values that drive the people in the photograph, take all steps to resist the spread of their ideas and fight for free speech against their oppressive views on the position of women, the rights of non-Muslims, the right's of homosexuals and the freedom to criticise any ideology - I won't call these people's beliefs a religion, I so detest the implications of their views for everything I value about my world.
