Some facts:

The Unknown Rebel - This famous photo, taken by Associated Press photographer Jeff Widener, depicts a lone protester, whose actions halted the progress of a column of advancing tanks for over half an hour.

It's interesting to ponder that the tank column was INDEED held for half an hour instead of brutally marching along.

There are so many images that will be forever burned in to my mind. The nude girl running down the road after the Napalm attach on her village. Or the fall of the Berlin Wall. Or even the first photo of the Earth taken from the moon.

Its photos like this that move me to take my camera with me everywhere I go. Because you never know when History will happen and you may need photos to prove it.

It's a tragedy that those who know about will never forget.

Sadly, not enough know about it.

I am a 17yr old American girl, who learned about it in
the movie The Tank Man, they showed a few prosperous
students at a Chinese university who didn't know what
this image was representing.

Hi, I started a group 1989 - When the Wall Came Down. I would like to have a collections where parents or teachers can find material and retell the next generation about this wonderful year in Central and Easter Europe. I would be very happy if you would join in, and send a few photos under CC licence, meaning that people could use at least one or two of your photos for non-commercial purpose. (I know that in China the wall did not come down, but it was the same year and same inspiration) Daniel

Hey, I used this shot in my blog post here:

In keeping with creative commons I linked to this page, and your profile for accreditation.

Let me know if that's cool, or if you'd like it removed.

Thanks

We still don't know what happened to that brave and defiant man, who stood alone to confront a column of tanks in 1989.

We still don't know how many hundreds, perhaps thousands of other unarmed civilians were killed and injured on 3-4 June 1989. And we cannot be sure how many of the protestors calling for democracy and freedom that fateful summer are STILL in prison.

But 20 years on, the image of the "Tank Man" still inspires us. And 20 years on, it is time to stand with the Chinese people in their search for answers - they have waited too long.

The Chinese government has built a wall of silence and censorship around the events of 1989 and the brutal killings in Tiananmen Square. But walls can be broken down. At this landmark 20th anniversary, now is a crucial time to stand in solidarity with the people of China.

A petition will go to the Chinese Embassy in London to press the Chinese authorities to end their silence so that the relatives of the protestors killed can finally mourn their loved ones.

We must let them know that 20 years on the world has not forgotten, and that we stand alongside the Chinese people in their search for answers and justice.

"The course of the Nanjing protests went from anti-African sentiment to banners proclaiming Human Rights. The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 came 4 months after the anti-African protests in Nanjing and some elements of the Nanjing protests were still evident, such as banners proclaiming "No Offend Chinese Women"."
